Callaway Golf Mack Daddy 4 Wedges - Preview

Callaway Golf has released an ultra- premium wedge called Mack Daddy 4, created with an appealing new shape, forged of soft 8620 carbon steel, and delivering an exceptionally satisfying feel and response on every shot.

Less offset, a squarer toe and a straighter leading edge create a clean, confidence-inducing appearance at address to promote crisp contact and command control.  Higher spin comes from the new Groove-in-Groove technology and surface treatment to promote added stopping power, especially on pitches and chips.  Callaway also added an extra 16th groove to provide extra grab on shots hit from right lies that are often hit thin.

I'll have some first impressions for you next week at the PGA Merchandise Show.  In the meantime here are a few of the key features of the new MD4 wedges.

Key Features:
  • The main grooves are horizontally milled and saw-cut to precise tolerances. In the lower lofts (52° and below) a 20D groove has been used for consistent spin on fuller shots, while higher lofted wedges (54° and above) feature an aggressive 5D groove configuration for maximum control out of the rough and around the green.
  • Each wedge features a 16-groove configuration which also includes a new extra ‘Nip-It’ groove near the leading edge for added control, especially on shorter shots.
  • In-between each main groove on the flat part of the face is a milled ‘Micro-Positive’ surface texture that features three raised micro-ridges, extending the length of the hitting area. Micro-grooves between the ridges then help grab the ball’s cover to increase spin significantly on a variety of shots.
  • This combination of grooves, plus micro-grooves, provides 84 different contact points to grab the cover of the golf ball.

MD4 wedges ($149) are available in 21 loft-bounce combinations and nine lofts: 46*, 48*, 50*, 52*, 54*, 56*, 58*, 60*and 64* making this line the most comprehensive in Callaway history.

4 Different Grinds
Four grind options are available to suit a variety of different swings, attack angles, and course conditions.

  • The C Grind features 8* of bounce and has more heel relief than previous models to make it easier to hit with an open face and from right lies.  C Grind is ideal for sweepers and firm turf.
  • The S Grind features 10* of of bounce) and it's medium width sole with strategic heel relief makes it exceptionally versatile.
  • The W Grind features 12* of bounce and offers a generous amount of camber to help avoid digging.  This should be a great wedge in bunkers, thick rough, and for softer turf.
  • The all-new X-Grind features a narrow, 12* bounce crescent sole, making it excel for moderate to steep angles of attack and on medium to soft turf conditions.  The clearly defined crescent sole makes it easy to play a broad range of greenside shots.

Added control comes from progressive CG positioning, in which the CG gradually moves upward as the loft of each wedge increases.  This promotes a lower and easier-to-control flight in the higher lofts without sacrificing spin, making it easier to attack the pin.

Mack Daddy 4 Forged wedges are available in two finishes: Satin Chrome with a thin copper strike layer for enhanced feel, and Brushed Slate for a raw look that gradually rusts over time.

  1. I have been seriously considering these....Texas ground gets so thin around the greens during winter play. I need something to help with the thin lies....
