Mizuno Golf T20 Wedge Review: PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas Golf Giveaway

I'm a wedge freak.  I have countless models, lofts, grinds, and even designs.  The short game is what it's all about for me.  And few things in golf are more satisfying than sticking an approach right on the pin, or escaping from what seems to be an impossible lie in the sand or rough.

The right wedge can improve your scores immediately, and make the game more fun than you ever before imagined.  And the new Mizuno T20 wedges are the gold standard for scoring and fun.  Feel is unmatched, spin is spectacular, and they were the most consistently performing wedges I hit this season.

One of you will win a set of T20 Blue Ion 52 Degree Gap and 58 Degree Sand wedges in DAY 12 of my PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas Golf Giveaway.  And if you followed along with my T20  reviews on twitter and Instagram, you already know why I hold these wedges in highest esteem.

I played T20 out at Oakland Hills South (before it closed for renovation), Scioto CC, and most recently on the Ocean Course at Kiawah.  Courses where precision on approach and recovery can mean the difference between a shot you jump up and down with excitement about, or bury your head over in exasperation.  T20 had me jumping up and down... a lot.

Like we've done all week I'm going to hit a few bullet points about what makes the T20 beyond compare for you here.  And post a few more pics you haven't seen from me yet, because Blue Ion is the sexiest, most pleasing blue finish on a club I've ever seen.  And oh yeah?  It's also the most durable blue I've ever played.

Feel and consistency are the most important performance features in most clubs, particularly in your wedges.  And I'm going to start with feel first, because there's really nothing like the T20 feel on the market.  It's the epitome of Mizuno's #nothingfeelslikeaMizuno battle cry.

You've heard me talk about the copper underlay in the T20 wedges (and MP20 irons as well for that matter) for the better part of this season.  And it's truly just sooo good.  You get crisp, decisive feedback on every kind of shot you hit, from a dead-center flush to one you drop out towards the toe.

If instructive or illuminating shot feedback is important to you, I'm not sure there's a wedge out there that's going to educate more than the Mizuno T20.

And speaking of pure strikes, the sensation is as close to perfect as I've ever felt.  The deepest, softest vibrations at impact you can imagine.  T20 is very smooth feeling but also very strong.  And when you hit a good shot, this kind of feel just makes your shots more enjoyable and satisfying.  A good shot's sort of like eating a really juicy, delicious steak.  The T20 makes that steak juicier and more delicious.

The weighting and balance of the Mizuno T20s gives you a heightened awareness of the club-head during your swing.  So it's not only feel at impact that's so beneficial, it's also the swing feel.  And that of course is going to make you more confident in executing whatever shot you're trying to hit.

Spin with the T20s is the best spin I've had from any previous Mizuno wedge.  And I'm talking about shots hit from everywhere in the fairway, rough, and sand.  Mizuno uses something they call Hydroflow Micro Grooves, and with each wedge I played (46, 52, and 58), I saw extremely consistent carry, launch, and spin on both perfect strikes and mishits.

Whether I was chipping, hitting full or half shots, or found myself on tight lies or in some heavy sand, the Mizuno T20 produced precise shots with the kind of consistency that sometimes made me laugh out loud and just Michael Jordan shrug my shoulders.  In fact, I'd have to say on center strikes or even when I caught shots a bit thin, these were the most consistent performing wedges with the tightest range of overall results.

There are probably wedges out there that spin more.  But the kind of impressive spin you get with T20 "consistently" is what makes them special.  You absolutely know when you hit certain shots you'll get a certain amount of bite or check-up from pretty much anywhere on the course.

While I wouldn't call the Mizuno T20 an extremely forgiving wedge, its teardrop shape and higher toe than previous models definitely opens up the sweet-spot.  As mentioned earlier, when you catch one thin the results are very playable.  And mishits high off the face (like you sometimes get in the rough) don't severely punish in distance and directional dispersion.

My Mizuno T20 pitching wedge (46 degree) has what I'd call a standard sole and bounce that clips easily through the turf and remains very stable on full shots.  The higher lofted wedges also come in subtle M-grinds or aggressive C-grinds to boost your short-game arsenal.  I had no problems laying open my 58 degree T20 for delicate shots around the green or when a particular recovery called for it.  And this was in both wet and dry conditions.

The Blue Ion finish isn't for everyone, but as mentioned it's just the smoking hottest blue I've ever seen.  The blue adds contrast to the classic Mizuno T20 shape, and frames the ball perfectly.  I've never been more confident standing over a wedge than I am with the T20s.  And after multiple rounds I can tell you it holds up very, very well.  Impact marks blend with the color, and the sole brush marks remain blue.

I've hit some legitimately great shots with the T20 wedges (along with MP20 irons which fill out my set), that I don't normally have dialed in with this kind of precision and consistency.  And the prize has been some of the most fun I've ever had with a wedge in my hand.

PROS:
Incredibly consistent height and directional control and spin
Versatile performers from everywhere on the course
Feel is second-to-none

CONS:
Not extremely forgiving
Some wedges probably give you a little more spin
