We're ringing in the New Year in a really big way for 2021. If you follow me on twitter and Instagram you saw I'll be giving away a 1 of 1 prototype CRU Golf Walkabout leather carry bag that was designed for Rickie Fowler to use at The Masters.
I took The Walkabout out for a mini-review earlier this week (don't worry, it's in pristine condition), to give you guys an idea of what the bag is all about, show you some features, get an overall feel for what makes this bag special, and to point out how it's similar to and different from the CRU Legacy leather carry bag (which I reviewed for you guys last year here).
CRU will make the new Walkabout bags available early this month, and they'll be 100-percent customizable. The price is $599, and you can contact them in email at CustomerCare@crugolf.com. They're absolutely great people and will work with you on designing a Walkabout that meets your every specification.
The body and shape will be standard (an 8" top for example, compared to 8.5" for the Legacy), but everything else will be all up to you. You can choose two pockets (like in the Rickie proto) or one. You can choose just about any color leather you want for the bag and pockets. You can choose one divider or two. The Walkabout will truly be a leather Sunday bag as unique as your own personality.
Before I get into some comparisons with The Walkabout and Legacy Sunday carry bags, I just wanted to share some of the story behind the name Walkabout. The name pays homage to the Australian Walkabout, a ritual where young sons are sent into the wilderness to survive on a journey of self-discovery, and undergo a spiritual transition to manhood.
And golf in its purest form is a similar rite of passage. Walking any course opens up the landscape, brings the scenery, architecture, challenge, and strategy together, and really allows you to be one with the course and nature. And that's what the CRU Walkabout Sunday bag is all about.
Like the Legacy bag, The Walkabout is made from the finest, most supple leather, yet it's also incredibly durable. High-stress, load-bearing areas of the bag are double riveted for the ultimate in support, and the base of the bag features double-reinforced leather for complete protection.
The Walkabout valuables pouch is lined with luxurious micro-suede, and the waterproof zipper makes sure the elements stay outside. The front ball pocket easily holds more than 36 balls (that's the amount I threw in for my review to carry around), and yet it's still noticeably smaller than the front ball pocket of the Legacy.
The Walkabout is lighter than the Legacy (weighed in under 7 pounds), and has a smaller top as mentioned (8" as opposed to the Legacy 8.5".) And like the Legacy, the bag can be used unstructured, or structured thanks to an internal sheath that allows you to put an alignment stick in the spine to make the bag stand upright on its own. Both bags can comfortably hold a full set of clubs if you desire.
The shoulder strap is thicker than the original Legacy (and actually Legacy will be using the same Walkabout shoulder strap in future designs). I didn't measure, but it looks like a good three inches of padding, and it feels incredibly comfortable. The shoulder padding design is reminiscent of the sheepskin cover sleeve that slides over the strap in the most popular vintage bags of all time. I thought The Legacy shoulder strap in itself was already very comfortable. The Walkabout just raised the bar on that comfort.
And finally, similar to the Legacy, The Walkabout uses a three ring adjustable shoulder strap (Legacy is four ring) so you can move the overall weight and balance point of the bag however you like as you carry it. It's a spectacular feature.
And there you have it. CRU should start making The Walkabout available for custom order early this new year, and I'll certainly be ordering and designing one for myself. Both the Legacy and Walkabout Sunday leather bags are designed to be enjoyed for a lifetime. And I can tell you already the feeling you experience carrying one over your shoulder is pure joy.
I'll start The Walkabout Leather Carry Bag (Rickie Fowler proto 1 of 1) giveaway sometime Sunday afternoon. Like always you'll be able to enter here by leaving a comment, and on twitter and Instagram.
Happy New Year everyone!
Great review and article Pete. This bag looks sweet!
ReplyDeleteGreat write-up Pete! Love the customization feature. 2 pockets is definitely sufficient for me. Most modern bags go nuts with them.
ReplyDeleteAnother great review, Pete! And I for one being, a Georgia bulldog fan, love the color combination on this one!! Go Dawgs!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat review and beauty of a golf bag.

ReplyDeleteI haven’t thought about a new bag in quite some time, and wasn’t familiar with this type of bag, but I’m interested and thinking about a new bag now. Great review. Great bag.
ReplyDeleteAppreciate your insight on this gorgeous bag. I can definitely see myself carrying this bag on a quick 9 or on a relaxing Sunday afternoon round. The customization is a plus as well as the large pockets that hold 36 balls. Hopefully I won't be loosing that much balls on a 9 hole stretch.
ReplyDeleteHas a sweet throwback vibe to it!
ReplyDeleteThis bag looks great. No excuses not to walk more with this. #newyearsresolution
ReplyDeleteLove the look and the size, especially the fact that you can set the weight or pivot point on the straps depending on the amount of clubs you are carrying.
