How a Club Champion Driver Fitting Benefits Every Golfer and Every Skill Level

People ask me about Club Champion all the time.  And one particular question I get a lot is, "Pete, will a Club Champion fitting really benefit me?"  These questions come from low-handicap players and high-handicap players alike.  Low-handicap (better) players aren't sure a fitting can make a big difference in their game that's already great.  High-handicap players wonder if a fitting even matters at all because their game is so inconsistent.

So I decided to write this Club Champion driver fitting review with that question in mind.  And as you'll see for both low-and-high handicaps the answer is a resounding yes.

Why a Club Champion Driver Fitting Matters for Every Golfer

You probably know people who believe driver fittings only benefit low handicap players (golfers who consistently finds center of the face, control launch conditions, and can move the ball) in a significant way.  But the benefits of a properly fitted driver aren't reserved for skilled golfers.  And in fact a driver fitting is equally (and can be even more) valuable for a high-handicap golfer although the goals and benefits may look very different.

My Club Champion fitter Mike explained how his fittings with skilled golfers are often about fine-tuning performance.  Whereas for high-handicap golfers fittings are more about making the driver easier to hit and reducing the severity of misses.  But in both cases Mike said his objective is the same, "To create a driver setup that gives the particular golfer the best opportunity to hit better shots."

The Skilled Golfer: Turning Good and Great Into Even Better

A skilled golfer usually arrives at a fitting with a relatively consistent swing.  They may already generate good clubhead speed, strike the ball reasonably well, and understand their typical ball flight.  And this consistency allows Mike to make highly specific adjustments.

Launch angle, spin rate, shaft profile, shaft weight, length, loft, and head design (among other measurable parameters) can all influence performance.  And a skilled golfer might not need dramatic changes in all these areas.  Even small changes in some of these areas can translate into meaningful and tangible performance improvements (not just during the fitting but over the course of an entire round and season).

Mike told me (for example) that a player who consistently delivers the club with a slightly downward angle of attack might benefit from a combination of loft and head characteristics that produces a more efficient launch (meaning the best possible combination for that player's specific swing to maximize distance).  Another player may already generate plenty of speed but produce too much spin.  That will sacrifice valuable distance so the right combination of head and shaft can help optimize those speed and spin numbers.

For these low-handicap golfers Mike's fitting process is about answering questions like:

  • Can we increase carry without sacrificing control?
  • Can we tighten dispersion?
  • Can we optimize launch and spin?
  • Can we improve energy transfer at impact?
  • Can we make the driver's ball flight better match the player's preferred shot shape?

Mike said while these improvements might sometimes only result in (and be measured by) a handful more yards or a modest reduction in dispersion, these small gains matter greatly to a competitive or low-handicap golfer because it brings them closer to their absolute maximum potential.

The High-Handicap Golfer: Making the Game Easier

A high-handicap golfer typically has a different set of challenges.  Their swing may be less consistent from one shot to the next.  Contact can vary significantly.  Mike said the biggest problem isn't necessarily a lack of distance.  It may be the occasional enormous slice, a low pull, or a shot that loses substantial distance because it strikes the clubface well away from the center.

And this is where a Club Champion fitting can make a noticeable difference in a high-handicap golfer's game.

Mike told me he isn't trying to turn a high-handicap golfer into a Tour player.  Instead he's looking for equipment that works with the golfer's entire motion to help make common misses more manageable and good shots even better.

So this could mean choosing a driver with characteristics that help reduce a slice, choosing a shaft weight that the golfer can control more easily, adjusting loft to improve launch, or selecting a head design that provides more forgiveness on off-center strikes.

Mike gave me another example.  He said let's assume a golfer comes in to Club Champion with a bad drive that finishes 25 yards offline with their current driver.  If Mike can get this player into a setup that reduces that miss to 15 yards then the fitting has delivered an enormous practical benefit (even if their best drive doesn't go any further).

For almost every high-handicap golfer keeping the ball in play can be more valuable than chasing maximum distance.  The goal for a high-handicap golfer isn't perfection.  And meaningful improvement is often as simple as better misses.

One Process but Two Different Objectives

What makes a Club Champion driver fitting so valuable across different skill levels is that driver is optimized around the unique golfer rather than pigeonholing golfers with common swing parameters into the same (or similar) type of driver.

Here's an example Mike gave me: Consider two players who both swing the driver at 95 mph.  One is a skilled golfer who consistently strikes the ball near the center of the face and has a predictable delivery.  A fitting for this type of player might focus on optimizing launch and spin to squeeze out another 10+ yards while also tightening dispersion.

The other player is a high-handicap golfer who also generates a clubhead speed of 95 mph but strikes the ball all over the face and delivers the club differently from swing to swing.  In this case Mike is going to focus this fitting on forgiveness, launch, shaft weight, and reducing the damage caused by their common miss.

The swing speed for both of these players is identical, but the Club Champion fitting objectives (and ultimate driver builds) are completely different.

It's Not Just About Distance

One of the biggest misconceptions about driver fittings is that they're simply a search for the longest possible distance combination of head and shaft.  But as Mike said, "While distance certainly matters it's only one piece of the puzzle."  A driver that produces an extra five yards but turns a golfer's usual miss into a bigger problem can actually make their scores worse.

So for a skilled golfer the best driver may be the one that combines distance with predictable dispersion.  While for a high-handicap golfer the best driver may be the one that gives up a small amount of maximum distance in exchange for significantly better contact, consistency, and forgiveness.

In both cases the best driver is the one that produces the best overall results and not necessarily the longest single shot or shots.

The Importance of Confidence

Mike also believes there's a psychological benefit to being properly fitted.  Standing on the first tee with a driver that suits your swing (and eyes) can create confidence.  And a golfer who knows a driver is built specifically for their swing characteristics is less likely to feel the need to adapt to the driver or manipulate their swing to make it work.

For a skilled golfer that confidence can encourage them to commit fully to a shot.  For a high-handicap golfer it can be even more important (especially if their current driver consistently produces unpredictable results).

Confidence alone doesn't fix a swing but it can help a golfer make a more committed swing.  And knowing the Club Champion fitted driver is designed to help with your particular tendencies and suits your eye can make the tee shot feel less intimidating with less fiddling around over the ball.  Mike's goal for the golfer at setup is "everything looks good, line up, and go."

Diving Deeper into the Club Champion Driver Fitting

Driver fittings can be approached in very different ways.  Many fitters use a method or philosophy that I'm going to call "Outcome Fitting."  Your fitting here will adjust and tweak driver measurables like loft, head, shaft, weight settings, and length, etc.  And from there each combination will be judged by the immediate outcomes.  What setup produces the highest ball speed?  What produces the lowest spin, the longest carry, the tightest dispersion?  This of course will always matter and is necessary in any good driver fitting wherever you get it done.

Club Champion however goes deeper.  And I'm going to call their approach "Dynamic Fitting."  Club Champion still addresses things like launch, speed, spin, carry, and dispersion.  But as Mike explained he asks an additional (and maybe even more important) question in his fittings: Does the driver produce a good result even when the golfer's swing and strike aren't perfect?

The Distinction Between Regular Outcome Fitting and Club Champion Dynamic Fitting

This distinction matters for every golfer.  And it becomes particularly important when we compare fittings for the low-handicap and high-handicap golfer.

Outcome Fitting

Outcome fitting is essentially an optimization exercise.  The fitter changes one or more driver parameters, the golfer hits several shots, and the resulting data is evaluated.  One combination might produce 2-3 more mph of ball speed.  Another combination might produce slightly less spin.  A third might produce the longest carry.  And a combination eventually emerges that appears to be the winning driver setup.

Let me say first there's nothing inherently wrong with this approach.  And it can be extremely effective for golfers consistent enough to produce the same delivery and strike pattern repeatedly.  But there is a potential weakness.  The fitting can become overly dependent on the best results.

That may sound counterintuitive but Mike gave me this example: A golfer might hit three excellent shots with one driver and produce spectacular numbers. Another driver might produce slightly less impressive peak numbers but perform substantially better when the golfer misses the center of the face or changes their delivery.

If the fitting focuses primarily on the best outcomes the first driver can appear to be the obvious winner.  On the course however the second driver may be the better club.

Club Champion Dynamic Fitting

A Club Champion driver fitting looks at the overall distribution of shots and not just the best results.  So instead of asking simply, "What setup produces your best numbers?" Club Champion also asks, "What setup gives you the most reliable performance across the range of swings and strikes you actually produce?"  In other words Club Champion is looking at more than averages and maximums.  They are also looking at the distribution of outcomes.

Mike asked me to consider another example:  Suppose a golfer produces the following carry distances with two different drivers:

Driver A:  260, 263, 265, 266, 267 yards

Driver B: 248, 257, 269, 276, 279 yards

Driver B has the higher maximum and the higher average distance.  But if the golfer's objective is to keep the ball in play (tighter downrange dispersion) Driver A may be considerably more useful.

Now also imagine a high-handicap golfer whose strike pattern is much less consistent and produces the following carry distances with two different drivers:

Driver A: 220, 218, 214, 209, 195 yards

Driver B: 216, 215, 212, 202, 188 yards

Driver A produces the longest drives but Driver B may be the better driver if poor strikes are more playable.

And this is the essence of a Club Champion Dynamic Fitting approach.  The object of fitting is not the golfer's best swings or their theoretical optimum but the distribution of all outcomes the golfer and equipment jointly produce.

We All Have a Range of Swings

Mike told me the delivered loft, angle of attack, face angle, club path, strike location, speed, and timing all interact with a driver's design. And those variables change from swing to swing.  So fitting a golfer based on idealized or optimal delivery misses an important part of fitting overall.  And that's why Club Champion recognizes and takes into account each unique golfer having a range of swings.

The skilled golfer's range may be relatively narrow. Their driver (clubhead) speed might fluctuate only slightly, their strike pattern may be concentrated around the center, and their face-to-path relationship may be relatively stable.  A high-handicap golfer's range is likely to be considerably wider.  So a Club Champion fitting analyzes how a driver behaves across that entire range (narrow or wide) for each unique golfer.

How a Club Champion Dynamic Fitting is Important for the Skilled Golfer

It might seem that a dynamic fitting is primarily a high-handicap concept.  But it isn't.  And a skilled golfer benefits from this in a very sophisticated way.

Imagine a low-handicap player who consistently delivers the club well but has two common strike locations: slightly high-center and slightly low-center.

One driver might produce spectacular numbers from the high-center strike but excessive spin from the low strike.  A different driver might produce slightly less impressive peak numbers but maintain much more consistent launch and spin across both locations.

Mike explained how the second driver may be the better choice because we don't know or get to choose our exact strike location before every shot.  And in this case the second driver will perform predictably within a normal range of swing variability.

Mike said, "The objective isn't simply to maximize the golfer's ceiling; it's also to raise the floor without lowering the ceiling."

How a Club Champion Dynamic Fitting is Important for the High-Handicap Golfer

For a high-handicap golfer it becomes even more obvious why the Club Champion fitting method and process is so important.  The primary problem may not be that their best drives aren't long enough.  It may be that their bad drives are too bad.

So let's assume Driver A produces 240 yards on a perfect strike but 200 yards and a severe slice (into the rough) on a poor strike.  This driver will be less useful on the course than Driver B that produces 230 yards on a perfect strike and 190 yards with a slight fade (into the fairway) on a poor strike.  And this is where forgiveness becomes more than a marketing term.  It becomes a real on course advantage from your Club Champion fitting.

The Importance of Fitting at the Edges

A Club Champion driver fitting examines how the driver responds when the golfer does everything they normally do and not just when everything goes right.  So Mike is observing what happens when:

  • Strikes moves away from the center.
  • Driver (clubhead) speed changes.
  • The golfer swings slightly harder.
  • The golfer makes their typical miss.
  • Face-to-path changes within their normal range.
  • Attack angle changes.
  • Face opens or closes at impact.
  • Contact moves high or low on the face.

Mike said (for example) if a golfer tends to miss toward the toe (like I do) he's going to configure different heads, CG locations, lofts and shafts (which all influence the resulting ball flight) not necessarily with the goal of completely eliminating the miss but rather with the goal of making the miss significantly less costly (and often even getting impact consistently closer to center of the face more often).

It's a fine distinction but it's an important one.  Getting fit for driver and walking out with the one that produces the best measured outcomes vs. getting fit for driver and walking out with the one that produces the most useful performance across your realistic range of swings and strikes.

The Best Fit May Not Necessarily Win the Launch Monitor Contest

All of this doesn't mean Club Champion is ignoring launch monitor numbers.  In fact it's quite the opposite.  In Mike's opinion launch monitor data becomes more valuable because he's looking at patterns rather than isolated results.

So instead of just looking at and heavily weighing average carry, a Club Champion fitting is looking at average carry, ball speed retention on mishits, spin and launch variability, strike location patterns, and performance across all your swing speeds and typical miss.

Club Champion isn't merely optimizing a driver for you and your swing.  They are optimizing a driver for the full range of your swings to gain more consistency.

For one player that could mean maintaining ball speed across the face.  For another it could mean reducing curvature when contact moves toward the heel. And for still others it could mean making launch more predictable, or creating a more stable club that doesn't punish small changes in delivery.

Again, imagine two drivers.

Driver A produces:

  • Slightly higher ball speed.
  • Slightly lower spin.
  • Two more yards of average carry.
  • Excellent results when struck precisely.

Driver B produces:

  • Slightly lower ball speed.
  • Slightly higher spin.
  • One or two fewer yards of average carry.
  • Much smaller changes in overall performance when strike or delivery varies.

Driver A would seem to win on the launch monitor but Driver B would be a more practical player-centric best fit.  And the more inconsistent the golfer the more compelling Driver B can become.

The same principle applies to a skilled golfer although the differences may be much smaller.  A competitive player may gladly sacrifice a couple of yards if the resulting dispersion is more predictable under tournament conditions.

And for players of all skill levels a driver that performs beautifully inside a small window of shots but deteriorates rapidly outside them may not be as suitable as a driver that performs slightly less spectacularly at its peak but remains effective across a much larger window.

Conclusion

And this brings us back to the central point of this review.  A Club Champion driver fitting clearly benefits the skilled golfer and the high-handicap player but they benefit from it at different levels of the performance curve.

In practice golfers don't produce a single, repeatable swing every time.  Clubhead speed, attack angle, face orientation, swing path, impact location, and dynamic loft all vary from shot to shot and these variables all interact.  Even different drivers can alter the golfer's movement through changes in perception, feel, confidence, and adaptation.

And that's why a Club Champion driver fitting identifies driver configurations that produce the most favorable distribution of outcomes for a particular golfer given their characteristic swing, impact variability, and adaptation to equipment.

For a skilled golfer the benefit might be protecting against relatively small variations.  Their bad swing may still be a very good golf swing.  And Club Champion helps ensure that small changes in strike or delivery don't create disproportionate changes in ball flight.

For a high-handicap golfer the benefit can be protecting against much larger variations.  And Club Champion accounts for substantial changes in strike, speed, face delivery, and path.  The objective is to prevent those normal variations from turning into catastrophic results.

And as Mike said, "In both cases I'm doing the same thing fundamentally: matching a driver to the golfer's swing variability (narrow or wide) to make both good shots and misses better."

The reality of golf is that golfers don't have their best swings on every hole.  We all play with a natural variability in our unique motions and swings.  A driver that ultimately helps us the most isn't necessarily the one that produces the best possible drive.  Sometimes it's a driver that performs well enough, often enough, and across all the swings we actually make.  And that distinction is subtle but profound.
