NGF The Short Game: Course Economics in the Experience Era

The economics of a golf course business flows from a simple but powerful principle: every tee time represents perishable inventory that, once lost, can never be recovered. In golf, as with restaurants and other fixed-capacity businesses, this reality has two interlinked dimensions that we might consider.

First is the pure financials of unused capacity. When a tee time goes unfilled, the facility doesn’t just lose the green fee – it loses all the revenue accompaniments that would have come with it (food, drinks, range balls, hat, glove, etc.). For the average 18-hole public facility, we estimate total revenue per occupied tee time (“RevPOTT”) to be roughly 45% above playing fees alone, which is perhaps a more significant lift than you might have guessed.

USGA Unveils Innovative Soil Moisture Meter That Integrates with DEACON® Management System

The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced the launch of the USGA Moisture Meter. The easy-to-use tool provides golf course superintendents precise and consistent data regarding soil moisture, salinity and temperature. The data instantly uploads into the USGA’s DEACON technology platform, creating a digital record that can be used to more efficiently manage water usage, plant health and golf course playability.

The soil moisture sensors in the new tool are supplied by METER Group, the world’s leading provider of agricultural soil-plant atmospheric data, allowing for dependable readings and low maintenance. As on-course water-saving decisions become more paramount, and influenced by the USGA’s 15-year, $30 million commitment to help courses significantly reduce their water usage, the USGA Moisture Meter will give superintendents the data they need to determine how they can irrigate more effectively.

“I have read many times how great players have a special love for the Majors. Not sure I understood what that meant when I was younger, but now I get it. In the world of golf design, there are certain properties, locations and even owners that working for can be like playing in the Majors. Streamsong, for me, is a Major,” said architect David McLay Kidd. “The destination is world renowned and KemperSports ‘gets it.’ To be included in that group of architects requires my team and I to do something exceptional. That opportunity both excites me and makes me nervous, but in a good way. My team and I are so excited to add to the history of a place so young and yet so rooted in a tradition of exceptional golf architecture.”
