Scotty Cameron Special Select Squareback 2 Putter Review

The new Scotty Cameron Special Select Squareback 2 gives you an ideal blend of feel and forgiveness on putts from any distance.

‪I tested this hitting multiple putts from various distances and performance is off the charts.

‪From 10-feet in you can literally hit it anywhere on the face (across the three cherry dot cavity) and see roll and distance that’s basically identical.  Mishits in this area lose virtually nothing in pace or control.

‪From 20-feet in, it’s pretty much the same story with mishits.  Negligible distance loss, and you’re still likely to get it there and drop your ball in the hole unless you maybe try to die it right at the cup.

‪It’s really only on putts over 30 feet that you want to stay as close to center as possible, and even then there’s a consistent feel to lagging them close.  ‪I felt like Squareback 2 was more stable than the Newport models, but still had just as much feel across the face (you’ll know exactly where you hit it).‬

And at the same time (because it’s a larger blade head, but not quite a mallet), you’re also less likely to see wobbling of the head as your stroke opens and closes.

I chose two 15g weights instead of the standard 10g for more stability; and even then it’s not so heavy that it controls my stroke like maybe a Flowback or Del Mar would.

‪Feel is soft as you’d expect milled from a solid billet of 303 SS, and isn’t clicky at all like the Phantom series.  It’s a soft, but strong and deep feel at impact.  But again with a delicate touch on short putts or sneaky lines.

‪Aside from the fact some heads will suit different strokes better than others, and we all have different perspectives on what looks good and what doesn’t; Squareback 2 is a putter that consistently rolls and feels great anywhere on the green.  Big fan of this one.

  2. Hi , I have this putter and am interested with experimenting with the sole weights(something I have never done before). I see that you have replaced the stock 10 gram with the 15’s. Would 20 grams be too much and interfere with the design of the club/sweet spot or is it more of just a feel/personal preference type thing? Thanks.

    1. I have 20g for my squareback2 and it works perfect.
      My putter is 33 inch
Scotty optimizes it weights with length of the putter.

    2. Adding weight is a feel thing for sure. It helps me control the head and gives me the sensation of having a better connection between hands and head. Adding more weight won't change the performance unless you add different weights in different spots, ie, more/less in toe/heel. Adding weight just helps my distance control and helps me feel the differences more between say a 5 and 10 foot putt. You can experiment with lead tape before changing the actual weights to see if it's for you. As a reference/staring point: two gram of lead tape will change swing weight by one point.
