The idea behind the new Callaway Quantum Mini Spinner fairway wood is pretty intriguing: create a club that can replace a traditional long iron, hybrid, or fairway wood while offering more spin, higher launch, tighter dispersion, and greater forgiveness.
After putting it through both Trackman and on-course testing I can tell you the concept isn't marketing hype. It's legit. Mini Spinner delivered impressive results and in several areas performed better than both the similarly lofted hybrid and traditional fairway wood.
I also compared my Quantum Mini Spinner (21-degree) 7-wood to the 21-degree Callaway Quantum Max hybrid and 21-degree Quantum Max fairway wood. The same AD DI 7S shafts were used in all clubs. And thanks to Club Champion for letting me get some numbers as always.
Trackman Testing: Quantum Mini Spinner vs. Quantum Max Hybrid
I started by comparing my Quantum Mini Spinner to the Quantum Max (21 degree) hybrid and there were some significant differences in ball flight.
Ball Speed, Spin Rate, Peak Height, and Descent Angle
Mini Spinner produced about 4 MPH faster ball speed, close to 600 RPM more spin, and nearly 2 degrees higher launch angle. Mini Spinner also reached a peak height roughly 20 feet higher with a descent angle almost five degrees steeper. Despite these differences total distance was essentially the same but Mini Spinner rolled out approximately 3 yards less (an important distinction) showing it can hold greens more effectively and consistently.
Ultimately my Mini Spinner produced more speed, more spin, more height, and a much steeper descent angle without sacrificing any meaningful total distance. You're essentially getting hybrid distance with a mid-iron (even short-iron) like descent angle. If you've ever watched your ball land on the green and take off running like it just heard a starter's pistol you can appreciate the value of that.
Dispersion
Dispersion was another pleasant surprise. Quantum Mini Spinner tightened downrange dispersion by approximately 5 yards compared to the Quantum Max hybrid. Side-to-side dispersion was virtually identical with no directional bias for either club. And when you add in Mini Spinner also having this smaller overall landing area that's a pretty compelling combination that I'll take all day.
Trackman Testing: Quantum Mini Spinner vs. Quantum Max Fairway Wood
Next up against the Quantum Mini Spinner was the Quantum Max (21-degree) fairway wood. And once again Mini Spinner showed some interesting advantages.
Ball Speed, Spin Rate, Peak Height, and Descent Angle
Mini Spinner produced approximately 3 MPH more ball speed, roughly 500 RPM more spin, and a slightly higher launch. Mini Spinner also reached a peak height about 6 feet higher with a descent angle nearly 3 degrees steeper.
Unlike in the hybrid comparison however Mini Spinner gave up about 4 yards in total distance to the Quantum Max fairway wood. But I think most players will give up that distance in exchange for more spin, higher flight, and steeper descent angle when that means you're going to hold greens from longer distances with Mini Spinner. At the very least it's a tradeoff worth considering.
Dispersion
And the dispersion numbers? You guessed it. Mini Spinner tightened downrange dispersion by approximately 5 yards and also improved side-to-side dispersion by about 5 yards. And this is going to make longer approach shots with Mini Spinner more predictable than with Quantum Max for many players.
On-Course Testing: Mini Spinner Leaves No Doubt
Trackman numbers are great but eventually you have to take the club outside and see what happens when your golf ball isn't sitting perfectly on a launch monitor friendly piece of artificial turf. And on course results backed up what I saw indoors.
The Quantum Mini Spinner consistently produced a higher launch and steeper descent angle than both the Quantum Max hybrid and fairway wood. The indoor distance differences also held up with Mini Spinner maintaining similar distance to the hybrid while coming in slightly shorter than the fairway wood.
Advantages Also from the Rough
One additional advantage that became particularly noticeable on the course was performance from the rough. Mini Spinner consistently produced more launch and spin from the rough (especially deeper rough) than I usually get with hybrid or wood. And if you've ever tried to launch a hybrid of fairway wood out of deep rough only to watch it come out looking more like a knuckleball than a golf shot you know why that extra launch and spin matters. Mini Spinner got my shots up in the air from these challenging lies with enough speed and spin to produce more playable trajectories and controllable landings.
Shorter Shaft for More Control
Another thing I appreciated was the slightly shorter shaft of Quantum Mini Spinner. It's .75 inches shorter than the Quantum Max fairway wood and (for me at least) it felt more controllable throughout the swing. And that added feel of control even translated to tighter side-to-side dispersion on course than I already saw indoors.
I can't scientifically confirm this last point but the eyeball test also showed/suggested Mini Spinner gave me even better consistency of launch and spin from shot to shot above and beyond what I saw with it indoors. And while launch numbers are what they are, seeing this kind of consistency on the course (in my opinion) is what truly builds confidence.
Not Just a Club for Slower Swing Speeds
Don't assume the Quantum Mini Spinner is exclusively for golfers with slower swing speeds or who need help getting their ball up in the air. Yes Mini Spinner's ability to launch high and produce additional spin makes it extremely attractive if you struggle to get your long irons, hybrids, or fairway woods up in the air. But there's another side to Mini Spinner that better players and golfers with faster swing speeds will also appreciate.
I was able to flight Mini Spinner both higher and lower depending on the shots I wanted to hit. In fact I found Mini Spinner comparatively easier to flight down compared to both the hybrid and fairway wood. Mini Spinner gave me the ability to manipulate trajectory, hit a penetrating shot when needed, and still take advantage of its higher launching, higher spinning characteristics when the situation called for it. There's more versatility here than the name might suggest.
Forgiveness: Misses are Almost as Good as the Good Ones
Here's where the Quantum Mini Spinner really won me over. We all know what happens when you catch a long iron, hybrid, or fairway wood a little low on the face or out toward the toe. Sometimes the results are playable. Other times you're left wondering if you should even be playing the game.
Mini Spinner was remarkably consistent on both toe misses and low misses. Shots retained a surprising amount of ball speed, spin, launch, and descent angle characteristics. On toe misses downrange dispersion increased by less than 5 yards. On low misses rollout never increased by more than 10 yards.
Forgiveness to me isn't just about keeping my ball in play or retaining ball speed. It's also about maintaining predictable flight characteristics when I don't catch the ball perfectly. And Mini Spinner did an excellent job in this department.
Conclusion
The new Callaway Quantum Mini Spinner delivered on just about everything I wanted to see from a club designed to replace long irons, hybrids, and fairway woods. And if you're looking for a club that makes long approach shots easier to launch, easier to control, and easier to hold greens Mini Spinner deserves a serious look.
Compared to the similarly lofted Quantum Max hybrid and fairway wood Mini Spinner consistently produced more ball speed, higher launch, more spin, higher peak height, and steeper descent angles. It also tightened downrange dispersion against both clubs and improved side-to-side dispersion against the Max fairway.
Add in its impressive performance from the rough, ability to flight the ball both high and low, and its remarkable consistency on mishits, and you see why Mini Spinner isn't simply a higher launching, higher spinning alternative to a long iron, hybrid, or fairway wood.
Mini Spinner is ultimately a better overall scoring club.
