Split Decision: Familiar Foes Malixi, Talley Co-Medalists at Bandon Dunes

A Code Red was issued for Bandon Dunes Golf Resort on Tuesday, and it had nothing to do with a pending storm. Well, an assault did take place at this breathtaking resort on the southwest coast of Oregon that is hosting the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.

The weapons were drivers, irons and putters, and it was a group of highly talentedgolfers doing the damage. It was almost as if Oprah Winfrey made a guest appearance.

NGF Short Fame: The Not Real Advantage

As we close out our discussion on short courses – for now – we’re struck by a perception that exists among younger Core golfers. While fewer than 10% of 18- to 34-year-olds view Par-3 and Executive courses as “not real golf,” more than a third still see them as a “lesser form” of the game (vs. “legitimate” or “better” versions – other views captured in our research).

It may not seem like much, but for an industry desperate to attract and keep this demographic – and considering the potential we believe exists for short courses to serve as community magnets and bridge points along the user pathway – the combined sentiment of illegitimacy would appear to be a fatal flaw.

Defending Champ Malixi Among Trio of Day 1 Leaders at Bandon Dunes

Between a July typhoon that affected her native Philippines and bureaucratic paperwork to obtain a student visa to play for Duke University this fall, Rianne Malixi nearly didn’t make it to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort for her U.S. Women’s Amateur title defense this week.

As early as last week, she was awaiting the final approval, which didn’t become official until six hours prior to the scheduled flight to the United States. Malixi arrived in southwestern Oregon on Saturday, in time to get nine holes of preparation in on the Bandon Dunes course, and an 18-hole round on Sunday. Video of the two most previous USGA championships conducted at Bandon Dunes – the 2020 U.S. Amateur and 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur – also helped the 18-year-old become more familiar with the David McLay Kidd design.

Callaway Golf Announces New Opus SP Wedges

When Callaway launched their Opus wedges las year they had two big goals in mind.  First, create a shape that Tour players would love and that would be validated with considerable player use.  Mission accomplished.  The second goal was to design a model that would generate lower launch and higher spin.  And that was accomplished with the Opus Platinum.

As incredibly successful and popular as Opus wedges were, the new Opus SP wedges have taken performance and precision to the next level.  Opus SP has achieved the best immediate conversion for wedge use on Tour in Callaway history.  At The Memorial Tournament (where players were seeing Opus SP for the first time) 18 of these new wedges were put in play.  At the Genesis Scottish Open 32 Opus SP wedges were being used.

Zinkland Golf Design Completes Extensive Renovation of Knollwood Country Club

Zinkand Golf Design(ZGD) – led by golf course architect David Zinkand and his more than 25 years of experience designing, managing and shaping projects in the field – has completed an extensive renovation of Knollwood Country Club in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Construction began in August 2024 and followed ZGD’s proposed master plan for the golf course, short-game area and driving range. The 100-year-old course already possessed a strong routing that took advantage of the site’s varied terrain, with more dramatic, rolling hills encompassing its perimeter and gentler grading toward its center. Therefore, ZGD focused on the improvement of numerous course features. They included the creation of a new par-3 17th hole near its original footprint, and shifting the tees and landing areas of the 9th and 10th holes to elevate their strategy and playability.
