The U.S. Senior Women’s Open kicks off next week at San Diego Country Club.

Founded in 1897 San Diego Country Club began as a nine-hole golf course. Years later, the club expanded by acquiring 160 acres of rolling farmland shaping the layout seen today. San Diego Country Club, originally designed by William Watson, is recognized as San Diego’s first established country club and the only private club in Southern San Diego County. William Bell later remodeled the course, adding length and enhancing the bunkers to enhance its difficulty and strategic appeal.

The Kid’s Alright: John Daly II Advances to Round of 32

John Daly II, the son of two-time major champion John Daly, won his Round of 64 match on Wednesday, outlasting Cooper Claycomb, 1 up, at The Olympic Club’s Lake Course in San Francisco, Calif. 

Daly, who failed to advance to match play in 2024, won just one hole on Wednesday – the par-4 11th with a birdie. He had a chance to go 1 up early with a 6-foot par putt on No. 6 but burned the edge of the hole and tied it with a bogey.

Stout Earns Medalist Honors After Championship-Best 65

Preston Stout fired a championship-low round of 5-under 65 on Tuesday morning to help himself earn medalist honors at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. The freshly-minted Walker Cupper paired his round today with a 3-under 68 on Monday to find himself atop the leader board.

Playing off the No. 1 tee on the Lake Course, the 21-year-old from Dallas, Texas navigated the toughest portion of the golf course and went out in 2-under, birdieing hole Nos. 7 and 9 before dropping a shot at the par-4 12th. With his head coach Alan Bratton on the bag, the Oklahoma State Cowboy quickly made up for it with a deuce on the ensuing par 3, before stringing together three more birdies on hole Nos. 15-17.

Birthday Boy: Tommy Morrison Celebrates 21st Birthday With Share of U.S. Amateur Lead

Tommy Morrison and Charlie Forster recorded a pair of 4-under 66s on Monday to share the lead after the first round of the 125th U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.

Celebrating his 21st birthday under seasonal Bay Area cloudiness, Morrison turned in the only bogey-free scorecard of the day while playing on the Ocean Course – the championship’s stroke-play co-host – in a marquee grouping that featured world No. 4 Preston Stout, of Dallas, Texas, and No. 5 Filip Jakubcik, of Czechia.

A lightweight driver shaft should in theory generate more distance.  They're easier to swing and allow you to swing faster to create more swing speed than heavier shafts.  The problem with lightweight driver shafts (for me at least) is there's often some other accompanying loss of feel, control, or accuracy.  Until now.

The new Fujikura Ventus VeloCore+ White is the first lightweight driver shaft I've played that checks all the boxes for me.  Increased swing speed and distance?  You bet.  But Ventus White also delivers consistent shot patterns and doesn't disrupt my timing and tempo.  I installed the Ventus White into my Ping G440 LST driver and I'll give you some comparisons in feel, launch, and spin to the Ventus VeloCore+ Blue shaft (which I play in a different driver) in this review as well.

U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion’s Medal To Be Named for JoAnne Carner

The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced the medal presented each year to the U.S. Women’s Amateur champion will be renamed and redesigned to honor golf legend JoAnne Carner in recognition of her remarkable golf career, which includes eight USGA championship victories, the most by any female golfer. 

The gold medal in its current form, which has not had a formal name prior, dates back to 1977. Beginning with the 126th U.S. Women’s Amateur at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., next August, each champion will receive the JoAnne Carner Medal along with the Robert Cox Trophy.

There are three fundamental things you need from a golf laser rangefinder.  One, you need it to be easy to use.  It doesn't matter how accurate or loaded with features it is if your rangefinder is a pain in the you know what to use.  Two, as just alluded to you need your rangefinder to produce accurate yardages otherwise what's even the point.  And third, it needs to pick up the targets you're shooting.  Easy to use and accurate is worthless if you're aiming at the wrong target.
