Callaway Golf Steelhead XR Fairway Wood Review - PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas DAY 8 Giveaway

Let this one bounce around your grapefruit for a bit.  Callaway Golf's new Steelhead XR fairway woods can be used with equal effectiveness on the tee, from the fairway, in the rough, and around the green.  One club.  Infinite utility.

No, they're not equipped with flux capacitors and won't leave a trail of flames in the turf when you swing them.  The Steelhead XR woods don't even have removable weights or an adjustable hosel.  Callaway's gone back to the future however, and recharged one of the most successful fairway woods in history with jaw-dropping performance that will give you an edge just about anywhere on the course

The Steelhead XR revives the spirit of the wildly popular and original Steelhead by giving its four-piece head a sleeker shape, with more power, forgiveness, and versatility than its predecessor.

A taller face makes it easier to launch rockets off the tee, and it comes in handy when the rough is ankle deep.  It's Callaway's latest wraparound Hyper Speed Cup face however, that provides the real testosterone.  I'm not talking marginal gains in ball speed.  It's more like Von Miller bursting around the edge to wreak havoc on a quarterback before the lineman even sees him kind of speed.  The face is all-out explosive.

By using a lighter carbon crown, Callaway moves discretionary weight around the perimeter of the head for better stability and forgiveness across the face.  It's Plug and Play easy to hit.  Shots don't balloon even when you go after it hard, and the medium-high, long trajectory is a sight to behold.

Even when your contact gets a little squirrely, good things still happen.  Shots hit low on the face lose negligible distance, and they stay in the fairway like you don't know how to hit the ball anywhere else.

Deeper curves and relief sections in the sole make the Steelhead XR play like a rescue club.  It plows through choppy rough as effortlessly as it slides across tight lies, and you can actually use it from the fairway bunkers and have confidence you'll pull off a highlight reel caliber shot.

Accomplished ball-strikers will land shots on a dime with the Steelhead XR fairway woods.  Players who don't practice a lot or have an inconsistent swing will experience a new dimension of forgiveness and accuracy.  And its enormous distance makes it a par-5 slayer for all.  The original Steelhead was pioneering, but this redesigned Steelhead XR is jam-packed with improvements that could make it an instant classic and even more popular than the original.

PROS:
Easy to launch with great power and low spin for majority of players
Compact shape makes it versatile from the thick stuff and off the deck
Marginal loss of distance between best and worst shots
A must have for anyone who hits a lot of fairway woods into greens

CONS:
Stock shaft option might increase spin too much off the tee for higher swing speeds

  30. Wow! That’s a great looking 3w, it’s almost hybrid looking. It looks like it could cut through rough and get some distance out of almost any situation.
One of my issues on par 5’s is getting there in 2 (like most I assume) this club looks like it might help with that. Only one way to find that out...hit it!
