Sand Valley Begins Construction on Tom Doak Design Sedge Valley

Sand Valley, one of the country’s premier resort destinations set amidst 12,000 acres of tumbling prehistoric sand dunes, announces new plans to expand its golf and resort experience. Construction on Sedge Valley, the third 18-hole design to be built on resort property, will begin in spring, 2022 under the direction of architect Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf Design.

Sedge Valley will add to the resort’s collection of top-rated layouts, Sand Valley (Coore & Crenshaw), Mammoth Dunes (David McLay Kidd), The Sandbox (Coore & Crenshaw) and the forthcoming Lido, which will open to members and resort guests in 2023.

Landscapes Golf Management has been selected to operate Twin Lakes Country Club, the well-known, family-owned, small-community gathering place in southeast Wisconsin that recently eclipsed its 100-year anniversary.

Metropolitan Golf Association Announces Purse Increase for Met Open Championship

As the Metropolitan Golf Association this year celebrates its landmark 125thanniversary, it is pleased to announce a purse increase for the Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway to $200,000.

The $50,000 increase over the purse’s previous total, which has been in place since 2007, is effective for the 107thplaying, August 23-25 at Bethpage State Park’s famed Black Course and elevates the always exciting opportunity for professionals competing in the field. The first-place prize for the 54-hole championship will now stand at $36,500—an increase of $9,000.

Silverado Resort and Spa Named Regional Golf Course of The Year by NGCOA

Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. has been named the is (Region 4) by the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). Each year, the NGCOA recognizes the most outstanding members of the past year, and the individuals and organizations that have helped preserve the tradition of the game while embracing the challenges and opportunities of the golf business. Silverado and all NGCOA award winners were recognized during the 2022 Golf Business Conference, January 24-26, in Orlando, Fla.

The National and Regional Course of the Year Awards recognize golf courses that epitomize exceptional course quality and management excellence, make important contributions to their communities and the game, and are models of operations to its peers. Silverado Resort and Spa was selected for Region 4 and is the only golf facility west of the Mississippi to be honored. Other Regional Course of the Year winners include, Swansea Country Club in Swansea, Mass. (Region 1); Sweetgrass Golf Club at Island Resort & Casino in Harris, Mich. (Region 2); and Streamsong Red in Bowling Green, Fla. (Region 3). Sweetgrass Golf Club was recognized as the 2022 Jemsek National Course of the Year.

This results in course lengthening that threatens golf’s long-term sustainability and undermines the core principle that a broad and balanced set of skills should primarily determine success in golf.

USGA Announces USA Walker Cup Team Captains for 2023 and 2025

The USGA has announced that Mike McCoy, of Des Moines, Iowa, will captain the USA Team for the 2023 Walker Cup Match on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland and Nathan Smith, of Pittsburgh, Pa., will captain the USA Team for the 2025 Walker Cup Match at Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.

“Both Mike and Nathan have long, exceptional histories with the USGA and outstanding amateur golf resumes,” said Stu Francis, USGA president. “Given the historic nature of the next two matches being staged at St. Andrews and Cypress Point, we wanted to give both of them the time to enjoy this leadership opportunity and plan their next few years accordingly. We congratulate each of them on an honor well deserved and look forward to watching them lead two talented USA Teams.”

2023 U.S. Girls’ Junior Awarded to Eisenhower Golf Course at United States Air Force Academy

The USGA announced on Thursday that the Eisenhower Golf Course at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., will host the 2023 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, becoming the first golf course affiliated with a military academy to host a USGA championship. The Blue Course of the 36-hole facility was originally scheduled to host the 2020 U.S. Girls’ Junior before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it will now host the 74th edition of the championship on July 17-22, 2023.

“There was overwhelming enthusiasm when we announced that we would be bringing a USGA championship to the Air Force Academy, and like so many things impacted by the pandemic, it was incredibly disappointing to have to cancel,” said Tracy Parsons, championship director. “We couldn’t be more excited to have another date set on the calendar and are incredibly appreciative of Eisenhower Golf Course and the Colorado Golf Association for their continued support of the Girls’ Junior.”
