When I review particular equipment and gear you guys know these are products I've tested that ultimately stand out as special. We also have chats in DMs and in posts about the reviews and gear and it's always incredibly gratifying to help you find new equipment and gear that works best for you.
And this guest review of the new Srixon ZX5 driver by Jon Ahlgrim makes me smile ear to ear. Jon won this driver in my PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas - Letters from Santa, and has gained "15 more yards" in distance from his old driver, and also "mishits that are more accurate."
In his own words, here's what Jon (@JonAhlgrim on twitter) thinks about his new Srixon ZX5 driver.
I won a new Srixon ZX5 driver last December as part of Pete Pappas’ annual “12 Days of Christmas” golf giveaway.
Before sharing my thoughts on this driver, let me first say thank you to Srixon Golf and Pete Pappas for this opportunity. Pete truly is the best follow in golf. He’s crazy knowledgeable about all things golf, funny and, perhaps most importantly, he engages with his followers. You’re among friends when you join Pete’s golf community.
I chose ZX5 driver over the ZX7 for one simple reason - I don’t hit the ball as far as I used to and the ZX7 is for faster swing speeds. My ZX5 comes standard with 9.5 degree loft and a 1 degree adjustment option. I’m using a regular flex Riptide EvenFlow shaft (5.5H 50 G).
I live in Wisconsin, so my first chance to try the drive was in February while in Arizona. I made no loft adjustments during my stay as I so wanted to make the 9.5 degree loft work. I hit the ball fairly well, but felt something was lacking. When I returned to Arizona in April, I changed the loft to 10.5 degrees.
Wow.
I had no idea how much difference this simple adjustment would make.
First, loft adjustments are super easy with this club. Simply unscrew, pull, turn to the desired loft and tighten. Time to do so, less than 30 seconds. I’m not sure how that fares with other top drivers, but I can’t believe it gets much simpler.
Now to performance.
After hitting only 15 or so drives on the range, I got the higher trajectory I’d hoped for. I also realized a more penetrating ball flight. I kept hitting, and it kept happening. I could feel my confidence increasing with every shot!
This combination results in about 15 more yards than my old driver. Mishits were also more accurate. Shots closer to the toe drew less with some “get” once they landed. And I can now live with shots closer to the heel as they are much straighter without a huge drop in distance.
I currently play to a 10 handicap, so I’m hoping this review appeals to all you average Joe’s and Josie’s. With so many drivers out there, it’s overwhelming to select just one. I’m thankful to Pete and Srixon Golf for helping make this decision easy for me (this time 😊).
Thanks again, Pete and Srixon golf!
