This guest review is from Jeff (@Jeff17Black on twitter) on his new Titleist TSR3 Fairway Wood and Hybrid. Jeff was one of the players in the Play With Pete Invitational at Scioto Country Club where everyone was fit for and received a new Titleist TSR driver for their rounds.
In his own words, here's what Jeff thinks about his new Titleist TSR3 Fairway Wood and Hybrid.
Well by now you may have read my TSR3 Driver review and know how happy I am with it. So happy in fact that I went and got the TSR3 3 Fairway wood and the TSR3 19-degree hybrid. I have had both for a few weeks now and can say once again, Titleist has found its way into my bag long term.
Let’s start with the 3 wood. I got the 15-degree head with a Mitsubishi Tensei 1K Black 75x shaft, which is a stock option, and a good one at that. As for settings, I am in B1 and T1. More on that in a moment. For me, I need a 3 wood to perform both off the tee and the turf. Over the years I seem to have a love hate relationships with my fairway woods. Some seem to do one well area and not the other. Part of it maybe looks or just general performance.
I am here to say the TSR3 has check the box for me on both aspects. Super easy to hit off the tee and I have not had much trouble getting it off the turf. The ball flight is as advertised for the TST3, lower and penetrating. If you need higher ball flights, Titleist recommends the TSR2. The TSR3 as allows for shot shaping. As my home course makes you hit the ball both ways, I am more a draw player, but have found that when I need a fade, it’s there. The set up and club make it easy to call on the shot shape when needed.
Like my driver, I have seen distance gains, but the best improvement I saw was consistency, regardless of a tee shot or a turf shot. That for me is a game changer. I have confidence to hit any shot knowing it will perform. I use to switch out my 3 wood depending on course and if I would use it off the tee more or turf.
For the hybrid I went with the same set up as the 3 wood, same shaft, and weight settings. The club also does everything well, tee shots and turf shots. The best thing for me about this hybrid has been my ability to flight the ball with ease. On shots where I need a higher ball flight to land soft on a green, no problem. A tight tee shot off a Par 4 and I want a lower flight to run out, no problem.
With my previous hybrids I could never flight the ball. It was a one shot for all, which is not always idea. I toyed with a driving iron for a while but wasn’t the club for me. In my opinion the TSR3 is a true hybrid, can be played like an iron or wood, and the head shape suggests that as well. This club is an absolute weapon.
Finally, I want to talk about the Sure-Fit system. To be honest without reading about it, it may seem confusing, letters and numbers, rather than Open, Neutral, Closed and increase or decrease of loft. Once I read the chart, I was not confused and found adjusting be very simple.
The sliding weight is simple and for me was a game changer. While others have a sliding weight, the simplicity of T1, T2, H1 and H2 (T- Toe, H- Heal) allowed me to dial it in fast. Noticing I was just near the toe on strikes, I went to T1 and immediately was seeing dead center strikes. I was amazed. Having played with the clubs for a few weeks, I can attest, I am still hitting center shots.
If you are in line for fairways or Hybrids, the TSR3 is worth a look. These are truly “can do everything” clubs. And the versatility and ability to adjust make them some of the best clubs out there.
Thanks for a fantastic, in depth review Jeff. Super happy to hear you love your new Titleist TSR3 Fairway Wood and Hybrid so much!
