FlightScope Mevo Gen2 Golf Launch Monitor Review: 10 Things to Know

Everyone who plays golf has golf equipment.  But not everyone who plays golf has a golf launch monitor.  FlightScope wants to change that.

With premium performance, advanced features, and cutting edge technology that rivals $10K+ launch monitors the new FlightScope Mevo Gen2 is almost impossible to resist at a price of just $1,200.

For serious golfers, recreational golfers, club fitters, and teaching pros the Mevo Gen2 goes down the list of things you want in a launch monitor and checks them off one by one.  Tour level accuracy, comprehensive ball data, club data, portability, ease of use, fun factor, and more.  Mevo Gen2 allows you to analyze performance, identify areas for improvement, improve distance, accuracy, and consistency, and even refine your choices in equipment and golf balls.  Mevo Gen2 is one of my favorite golf products of the entire year.

Here are 10 things to know about the new FlightScope Mevo Gen2 launch monitor.

Number 1. ▪️It's nice when we get the Easy Button in life.  And FlightScope gives you everything you need right out of the box.  No subscriptions, no fees.  It's all green for go.  You have your Mevo Gen2, carrying case, battery with USB-C, quick set-up guide, and even aluminum stickers for balls so they replicate the accuracy and measurement of RCT balls.

Number 2. ▪️You might think with all the abilities and features Mevo Gen2 gives you (the 18 data parameters for full swing, chipping, and putting; the incredible accuracy from radar and camera measurement; the powerful 3D video analysis; the versatility of indoor and outdoor use; the simulator capabilities with 8 iconic courses included; and on and on) that it might be a pain to set up?  Not even close.  If everything golf was this easy we'd all be shooting in the 60s every round.  Just charge your Mevo Gen 2 (it has a 6 hour battery life).  Download the FlightScope FS Golf app.  And then scan the QR code on the back of Mevo Gen2 and the radar and Wi-Fi network are connected.  You're now ready to rock and roll.  And for those of you like me who like to read everything about your new products the Mevo Gen2 on-line user instruction manual is one of the best I've ever used (as easy and detailed as it gets).

Number 3. ▪️The metrics (or data points) you get with Mevo Gen2 are insane.  You get: Carry Distance, Roll Distance,Total Distance, Ball Speed, Club Speed, Smash Factor, Vertical Launch Angle, Horizontal Launch Angle, Spin Rate, Spin Axis, Apex Height, Flight Time, Lateral Landing, Angle of Attack, and Shot Type.  It's a virtual smorgasbord of core data metrics along with more advanced data points that are crucial in analyzing your swing efficiency and having loads of fun in the process.

Number 4. ▪️There's also an incredible amount of customization with Mevo Gen2.  For data and viewing options you can view shots in real time shot tracer or ball tracer.  You can watch your sessions from a variety of perspectives including down-the-line, side-view, and top-view.  You can choose your environmental conditions like sea level, condition based, and weather details.  And even customize your sessions for ball type, manage clubs used during your sessions, and play a variety of games like PGA Challenge (where you challenge your skills against PGA and LPGA levels), Range Competitions (where you compete in challenges that test your precision and accuracy), and Long Drive Competitions.

Number 5. ▪️Setting up the Mevo Gen2 is pretty much as simple as putting silverware out on your dinner table.  You place your Mevo2 about 8 feet behind your golf ball.  The Mevo Gen2 camera will recognize your ball.  On the FlightScope FS Golf app you'll see the actual environment, your ball, a computer generated white ball, and yellow rectangular hitting area.  And then you just make sure your ball is aligned with the computer generated ball in the yellow hitting area.  Easy.  And it doesn't have to be exact.  Target and setup alignment in the app will verify if you're in good range or need adjustment.

Number 6. ▪️Okay this is a big one.  Mevo Gen2 vs. Trackman accuracy.  And I can tell you if this was a competitive race it would be a photo finish.  Mevo Gen2 and Trackman were dead-eye same 80-percent of the time.  In all 18 data parameters.  And the other 20-percent of the time the differences were so small they wouldn't even count for most margin-of-error discrepancies.  I'm talking 2-3 yards tops, one mph of ball speed or club speed, a few hundred rpm's of spin, or mere decimal points in angle of attack or lateral landing

Number 7. ▪️Mevo Gen2 uses Fusion Tracking (which was first released on FlightScope's $15,000 X3 launch monitor).  It combines both Doppler radar (3D radio waves) and camera (high-speed image processing) to deliver supremely accurate readings and metrics.  And there wasn't a single time where Mevo Gen2 didn't recognize and record data.  Of course Trackman measures over 40 different data points.  Trackman also costs 15 to 25 times as much as Mevo Gen2.

Number 8. ▪️The Mevo Gen2 also transforms your FlightScope i4 rangefinder into a virtual caddie.  All of your Mevo Gen2 launch data can be synced with the i4 rangefinder and give you the most accurate and real-time recommendations when you use the rangefinder based on statistical reports Mevo Gen2 generates for each and every club in your bag.  That's just freaking awesome.

Number 9. ▪️Mevo Gen2 also lets you can also play iconic golf courses with the free E6 simulator app.  Eight courses are included like The Ocean Course at Kiawah and Torrey Pines.  I haven't played any of the courses yet but FlightScope giving us a Play With Pete Invitational host course means I will sooner than later.  And Mevo Gen2 also gives you free other app compatibility with GS PRO, The Golf Club 2019, and Awesome Golf at no additional subscription price.  Other launch monitors require you to pay subscriptions if you want to use third-party software.

Number 10. ▪️If I have to nitpick about Mevo Gen2 it's really because they've turned me into a greedy SOB who wants is all.  Your own fault FlightScope for giving us so much awesomeness already with Mevo Gen2 at launch.  So yeah, I would have also liked a Face Impact data point.  Sure a little old school impact tape is keeping me satisfied for now.  But Mevo Gen2 uses the same core tracking engine as FlightScope's premium X3C launch monitor so it can be done.

The new FlightScope Mevo Gen2 isn't merely a phenomenal launch monitor.  It's a phenomenal launch monitor that's downright addicting and fun to use.  Data is precise, reliable, and engaging.  It can help you clearly and quickly pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in your swing and gain insights into where you can improve your game.  And that $1,200 price tag is outrageously good.

Quite frankly Mevo Gen2 is going to meet and surpass the needs for a majority of players who use or want to use a launch monitor.  You can take it anywhere.  It gives you access to free virtual courses and games to play.  And with an extensive range of premium performance features and technologies it's going to deliver one of the most accurate and detailed pictures of your swing of any launch monitor on the market today.
