Callaway Announces New Quantum Mini Spinner Fairway Woods

Landing soft is usually a wedge's job.  Usually.  But today Callaway Golf has announced their Quantum Mini Spinner, a new top-of-the-bag solution designed for golfers who need more spin, control, and confidence when attacking greens from distance.  These new offerings will be available at retail starting on August 14th.

Engineered with a compact, deep profile and optimized for higher spin, the Quantum Mini Spinner lineup delivers the stopping power and precision players often struggle to achieve with traditional fairway woods or hybrids.  Built to bridge the gap between woods and irons, it gives golfers the control they need to take aim and hold the green.  The Mini Spinner has recently been released in Japan, where it’s already the #1 selling fairway wood model in the market.

“We really feel like we’ve created a new category here with a product that’s going to solve a problem for a wide range of players,” said Jacob Davidson, Callaway VP of Global Product Strategy.  “We refer to the Quantum Mini Spinner as the Scoring Wood. It’s a new option in the top of the bag, for players who want the launch of a high lofted fairway wood and a steeper descent angle and more spin for greater stopping power.” 

Introduction to Quantum Mini Spinner

This unique construction and spec package of the Quantum Mini Spinner features a high center of gravity paired with an Ai-optimized high-spin face design.  This combination promotes increased spin, enhanced stopping power, and tighter dispersion for more controlled approach shots. 

Quantum Mini Spinner is ultimately a club you hit into greens to replace long irons.  And it's a scoring club designed to hold greens more consistently than similarly lofted hybrids or fairway woods.  Mini Spinner will get shots up in the air easier, spin more than your hybrids and fairway woods, and deliver a maximum angle of descent.

The Starting Point in Designing Quantum Mini Spinner

To optimize the Quantum Mini Spinner Callaway used the Great Big Bertha fairway wood with a deeper face and camber on the leading edge as a starting point for shape design.  This design allowed Callaway to retain the versatility of hitting out of both the rough and fairway.

Center of Gravity was made higher to increase spin.  Callaway accomplished this by using a steel crown and composite sole (which is opposite to the traditional construction of fairway woods that lowers spin).  And spin is increased even further with the deeper face of Quantum Mini Spinner by enlarging impact locations lower than the CG.  Essentially, Mini Spinner provides for a larger effective hitting area to generate maximum spin.

Quantum Mini Spinner Compared to Traditional Fairway Woods and Hybrids

Traditional 7-woods are designed to launch high and are great for distance but Callaway wanted even more consistency over a larger area of impact positions with Quantum Mini Spinner.  As mentioned above the Mini Spinner has a deeper face so this will allow and encourage hitting down on the ball and Callaway says they've seen between 500 and 800 more RPM compared to the traditional 7-wood.

Quantum Mini Spinner keeps loft the same as the traditional 7-wood and 4-hybrid but goes up with it's lie angle.  And the purpose of this was to allow golfers to have a steeper angle of attack and swing Mini Spinner more like an iron which makes it naturally easier to hit up in the air.

Compared to a 4-hybrid you'll also see higher launch and more spin at the same loft (21 degrees) with the Quantum Mini Spinner.  And while hybrids are traditionally good replacements for long irons Callaway wanted Mini Spinner to launch even easier than hybrids.  And testing has confirmed not only more spin and more launch, but also even greater carry distance compared to the respective 4-hybrid.

Ultimately the new Quantum Mini Spinner is a problem solver for players who don't like hitting high lofted fairway woods or aren't getting enough height or spin from their hybrids.

Quantum Mini Spinner Shaft and Sole Design

Designed with a playing length that is 0.75” shorter than a traditional fairway wood Quantum Mini Spinner promotes a more consistent impact and improved control through the hitting zone.  And the taller face profile provides added confidence and versatility, offering more usable face area for improved contact from anywhere on the course. 

Refined specifically for the Mini Spinner, the Step Sole minimizes turf interaction to promote cleaner strikes and more consistent center-face contact.  Plus, in the 7W and 9W a lightweight carbon sole allows mass to be repositioned higher in the head, raising the center of gravity to generate increased spin which also results in enhanced control. 

“We wanted something that was a little bit more repeatable, a little bit more consistent,” said Evan Gibbs, Sr. R&D Director – Woods.  “And the way that this club sets up with a shorter length, it's more approachable.  Impact locations are going to be a lot more consistent.  Players are going to tend to hit a little bit more down on it and feel that they can do that with a deeper face.  The big performance difference is going to be the increased spin rate, which is going to provide more consistency and less roll out when it lands on the green.”
