Oh Henry! Texan Guan Ousts Medalist in Round of 64

Henry Guan, admittedly, did not have his best stuff during the stroke-play portion of the 77th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Trinity Forest Golf Club and co-host Brook Hollow Golf Club.

Barely qualifying for match play on the cutline (3-over-par 144), the 17-year-old from nearby Irving then was handed the fate – by way of the USGA’s computer draw to break ties – of being the No. 64 and having to face top seed and medalist Mason Howell in Wednesday’s Round of 64 at Trinity Forest.

For 64 golfers, it’s a time to celebrate advancing to the match-play stage. But for a bevy of others, it’s about the disappointment of your championship week coming to a conclusion.

Stone, Wu Post 66s for First-Round Lead at 77th U.S. Junior Amateur

Mother Nature kept turning up the heat in north Texas, but that didn’t seem to bother a few of the 264 competitors assembled at Trinity Forest Golf Club and stroke-play co-host Brook Hollow Golf Club during Monday’s first round of stroke play at the 77th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

With temperatures soaring into the mid- to upper-90s and a Heat Index in the low triple digits, these two private facilities have been transformed into furnaces. Add some Texas wind that gusted into the mid-teens, and the challenge to stay cool under the pressure of a USGA championship only intensified.

Brandon 11 Golf Courses Voted Top Vacation Spot

Labor Day may mark the end of summer, and summer vacations, but that can make it an excellent month for less-crowded vacations, Afar Magazine stated in its recently published article titled “The 11 Best Places to Travel in September.” Afar named Branson No. 1 in the best-of list.

“September is great for an alternative to New England’s crowded leaf-peeping routes,” wrote Afar’s Mark Ellwood. “Consider a trip to Branson, Missouri, where maples, oaks, and ashes turn warm hues starting around mid-September, thanks to the higher elevation of the Ozark Mountains. Get on Highway 165 for a 22-mile scenic loop that offers superb views, including across Table Rock Lake. Or hop out of the car and go hiking around the more than 1,500-acre Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area.”
