41st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship - Meet the Semifinalists

The semifinal round of match play at the 2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship will be played at the 7,322-yard, par-71 Erin Hills.  Semifinal round winners will advance to the first 18 holes of the 36-hole championship match on Friday.

The final 18 holes of the championship match are scheduled for Saturday.  Here's a look at the semifinalists.

Irishmen Hugh Foley and Matthew McClean Join Josh Persons and Bryce Hanstad in U.S. Mid-Amateur Semifinals

It seems appropriate somehow that a pair of Irishmen have advanced to the semifinals of the 41st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Erin Hills. Erin is the poetic name for Ireland in Gaelic, and the 16-year-old course’s logo is a three-leaf clover. Cottages on the property are named for iconic Irish venues such as Ballybunion and Lahinch, and the pub has an Irish theme.

While the layout might not remind anyone of the historic links courses in Ireland, Hugh Foley, 25, and Matthew McClean, 29, have found the surroundings to their liking. And on a glorious Thursday – temperatures in the 70s with breezes in the 10- to 20-miles-per-hour range – the two Irishmen advanced to the semifinals in their first-ever appearance in this championship.

Sam Jones and Jake Shuman Early Leaders for Medalist in Rain-Delayed U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship

Mother Nature continues to wreak havoc on the 41st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Sunday’s storm dumped 4 inches of rain on Erin Hills and 5.3 inches at stroke-play co-host Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa, nearly 30 miles to the southeast, requiring a massive cleanup effort.

This was especially the case at Blue Mound, where 20 pumps were utilized to extract standing water from bunkers and fairways. Staffers from nine nearby facilities aided in the herculean task of making the course playable.

Titleist TSR Driver and Fairway Wood FIRST LOOK - A Titleist Fitting Review

I had just finished my fitting for the new Titleist TSR drivers and fairway woods at Windmill Lakes Golf Club and couldn't stop smiling walking back to my car.  When I got in my car I just sat there for awhile, still smiling.  Even thinking to myself "wow, just freaking wow."

Yes, I was extremely impressed with each new TSR driver and fairway wood model I hit.  The enhancements and new technology was real, and performance gains backed up by the numbers.  But even beyond that I was truly amazed the driver and woods I hit best were not what I expected.  And if not for my fitter Justin Long, I might not have even tried one of the drivers.

You guys already know how much I enjoyed my putter fitting at True Spec Golf in Beverly Hills a few months back.  It was on the same trip we did the Play With Pete Invitational for the first time at Pasatiempo Golf Club.  And if all that wasn't enough we had something extra going on as well.

I wanted one of you to experience what I did at True Spec, and so we opened it up on twitter and Instagram to pick someone to get fit for a new putter as well.  That winner was @JensenCollins3 (on twitter), and Jensen had himself a day, "I was ecstatic with the results and my best interests were always at the front of my fitter's mind."

Pinehurst No. 8 Re-Opens September 2nd after Agronomic Remastering

Pinehurst No. 8 will reopen Friday, Sept. 2nd, following agronomic and infrastructure enhancements highlighted by new TifEagle greens, fully restored bunkers with fresh sand, improved drainage throughout the course and the removal of invasive trees limiting views and inhibiting sunlight.

Additionally, the existing Bermudagrass turf on tees and fairways was “fraise” mowed to remove thatch throughout the course, tighten up lies and foster more rollout on tee shots. Fraise mowing is a highly disruptive mowing technique developed in the North Carolina Piedmont that effectively removes thatch, organic matter and soil from Bermudagrass in a single pass.

Green Holds First-Round Lead, Other Big Names in Close Pursuit at U.S. Senior Women’s Open

The opening round of a championship is all about putting yourself in position to have a chance to win. That’s exactly what a number of big names did Thursday at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, and none was better than Tammie Green, who played the South Course at NCR Country Club in 5-under-par 68, one stroke better than Catrin Nilsmark and Leta Lindley.

Lurking two strokes back of Green at 70 are 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Open champion Helen Alfredsson and Pat Hurst, who’s won both the U.S. Girls’ Junior and the U.S. Women’s Amateur and is trying to join Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, JoAnne Carner and Carol Semple Thompson as the only players to win three different USGA championships.
