Titleist 718 AP2 and AP3 Limited Black Finish Irons Preview - The John Wick of Golf Irons

It implies seriousness and professionalism.  It indicates strength and discipline.  The color black is authoritative and powerful, and Titleist is now offering their 718 AP2 and AP3 beasts of the fairway in a limited high polish black finish that makes these irons look even more cold-blooded and dangerous.

The new 718 AP2 Black and AP3 Black heaters are finished with a sleek, high polish black PVD coating that gives them a supercharged, almost venomous look that confidently asserts you're a force to be reckoned with.  These are the John Wick of golf irons.

The development of AP2 Black and AP3 Black was inspired by requests from the PGA Tour (where Titleist has been the #1 iron since 2005), and also from members of Team Titleist.

Tour players and amateurs were asking for the AP2 and AP3 irons to also be available in a finish similar to the Jet Black Vokey SM7 wedges.  So Titleist engineers went to work, and spent considerable time and effort to ensure the overall aesthetics were done just right.

True Temper AMT Tour Onyx shafts (with a powder coat matte black finish that helps minimize glare) were added as the stock shafts.  And all-black Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 grips were chosen to create a technically striking backed-out setup.

718 AP2 BLACK
The standard for Tour played iron technology
AP2 has raised the bar, improving on the technology and performance that's made AP2 the gold standard of modern tour irons.  A co-forged, cavity back design provides the ultimate playability with consistent distance and forgiveness, all packaged in a tour-validated profile that delivers pure forged feel.

For the Tour player AP2s deliver a look and feel they demand, and combine that with the precise distance control they need to hit their target shot after shot.  For the rest of is, AP2 is an iron that brings out the most from our potential because it's extremely playable and also very forgiving.

718 AP3 BLACK
Game changing speed and forgiveness in a hollow-blade iron
AP3 is the player’s distance iron.  With an innovative hollow-blade design and high-speed face technology, AP3 merges everything Titleist engineers learned from creating and advancing previous AP1 and AP2 models to produce Titleist's longest, fastest player's iron ever.

This is truly the best of both worlds, where you get the distance and forgiveness of a game improvement iron packed into the look and feel of a player's iron.  And 99-percent of the golfers I know would stick those kind of irons in their bag in a heartbeat.

Now I know in my brain that an iron finish isn't going to make me a de facto better ball striker.  But I also know that confidence is the single most important factor in this game, and just the pictures alone of these bad-ass looking AP2 Black and AP3 Black irons are making me feel damn enthusiastic about my game.  I'll let you know if I see and hit them at the PGA Show next week.

The 718 AP2 Black and AP3 Black are available March 1st ($187.50 per club, $1499 per set of 8), and friends, that date can't get here fast enough.

  1. he quality of golf clubs does make a difference, but the change only increases with your skill level. A pro would not play as well with lower quality off-shelf Golf Clubs, but the difference between cheap good quality clubs and more expensive branded clubs for an amateur is not significant.
