Callaway Jaws MD5 Wedge Review: PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas Golf Giveaway

If you've never experienced the thrill of hitting a wedge from the rough and stopping your ball dead on the green, you definitely want to check out the new Callaway Jaws MD5 wedges.

Jaws MD5 shape, feel, and versatile soles are the big story with these new wedges, but it's their incredible bite and spin performance that stands out most.

I reviewed the 52 S, 56 C, and 60 Low W wedges earlier this year on twitter and Instagram, and even played an entire round using only these clubs on a fall day at Manakiki when no one was on the course.

I hit pretty much every conceivable shot from every conceivable lie.  From the fairways, rough, and bunkers to see what these wedges can do.  And I did my best to answer all your questions as well.

But we're going to revisit some of the Jaws MD5 highlights again here since one of you is going to win your very own 56 degree, C Grind in my 12 Days of Christmas.  And I think you'll be as spellbound by their sorcery as I am.

First lets talk about spin because it's pretty dramatic, and definitely more than the previous MD4 models (particularly with the 56 and 60 degree wedges).

On clearly struck shots the 56 and 60 degree spin is superb.  I didn’t see as much spin with the 52, but that’s intentional.  Full and three-quarter shots with anything above gap (depending on quality of strike) gave me great stopping ability.  And even quarter-swings had quality bite.

Compared to PM grind wedges, MD5 have more spin that you’ll notice immediately.  And they also feel somewhat heavier (which is great if you want more clubhead awareness during the swing).  Jaws MD5 also have a crisper click sound and feel at impact (not forged but still soft for cast).

At address MD5 have a very classic look that blends well among the different lofts, and probably also with most iron sets.  Sure it's a mental thing, but I think consistency of looks definitely helps with consistency and predictability of ball striking.

As previously mentioned, the MD5 Jaws 52 doesn't have the same degree of spin as the 56 and 60, and that's because the groove configuration is more similar to the MD4 model than other lofts in the MD5 line.  However, you still get all the spin you need on shots with this kind of club.  And the medium-size sole with generous camber prevents digging into the turf.  It's one of my favorite Callaway gap wedges I've ever played.  Just pure, crisp contact and great flight control.

The MD5 Jaws 56 and 60 degree were the wedges that really excited me however, as they sort of opened my eyes to new shots I would't normally have been completely confident to pull off.

Despite having a low-to-mid bounce (8 degrees), the Callaway MD5 Jaws 56 degree C is without a doubt the most versatile Callaway wedge I’ve ever played.

Open it up just a bit, and it's silly easy to escape from sand with minimal roll out at worst.  And the toe and heel relief makes it extremely effective from just about any lie really.  I'm pretty much reaching for this 56 degree MD5 every chance I can.

The MD5 Jaws 60 degree (Low W) wedge has a wider sole than the other grinds, but also more front to back radius for a variety of shots.  And it was just as easy to hit shots that required opening the face as it was for those that demand a little check-up.

You'll see more spin on full shots with the 60 (as you'd expect).  But still get a lot of spin on three-quarter and one-half swings.  And with all these wedges, the spin is very consistent (which of course is just as important as the amount of spin itself).  The Low W grind isn't as forgiving as the S grind, but probably a little bit more than the C grind.

And finally, some of us experienced some significant ball shredding with previous Jaws wedges.  And while it never reached the point where I didn't want to play an older Jaws wedge, I did have concerns when I saw how much these new Jaws MD5 spun.

Well after at least 50 shots with all three MD5 wedges I didn't see any cuts in my ball at all.  Some dimple surface smudging, but no performance degrading damage (see pics comparing the same ball when I first put it in play versus what it looked like right before I swapped it out for a new one)

PROS:
Best spinning Callaway wedge I've ever hit
Consistent spin, flight, and distance control
Grinds give you options for every type of shot

CONS:
Cavity back wedges will give you more forgiveness
Feel not quite as soft as a forged wedge

  16. It might just be time to replace my oldest club in the bag, my Titleist Dual Wedge (54 or 56 degree I think) as I cannot seem to get it re-furbed anywhere. This would gap nicely between my Ping Tour-W 50 & 60 wedges. #Rel aseTheKringle over here please.
