Wilson Golf D7 Driver Review: PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas Golf Giveaway

If you followed me on twitter and Instagram this season, you saw one driver I used quite a lot was the Wilson D7.  And the reason is pretty simple.  It's a driver that gives you effortless distance, even if you don't swing fast.  And I'm convinced no one does lightweight speed better than Wilson.

I already reviewed the D7 driver on twitter and Instagram, like always getting it out on multiple courses over a few weeks to give it a thorough real-world workout.  And answered all your specific questions about how it performs as well.  But time to hit some key points again here since one of you is about to score this speed monster and win your very own.

First of all, highest praise to Wilson for designing a driver dedicated to distance and off-center forgiveness over adjustability.  There are plenty of golfers out there who just want a straightforward aim and fire driver, and the D7 is all systems go.

No sole weight or hosel adjustability however doesn't mean that Wilson hasn't fine tuned the sub-280 gram D7 driver to the max for various skill levels.  A lot of thought and legitimate R&D went into creating the D7 series.  And in a sense you can say Wilson is giving you something more by weighing less.

The weight saved by keeping it simple let Wilson design a 9 degree model with a lower, forward, and centered CG for the fastest swingers and those who want to move the ball easily in both directions.  The D7 9 degree definitely holds its own against other players drivers on the market.

The 10 degree D7 meanwhile, has a CG a little further back towards the rear for more help with launch and even greater forgiveness on off-center hits (probably the driver most amateurs will benefit from).

And finally, the 13 degree model features the furthest back CG for maximum forgiveness and ease of launch, as well as heel bias to help fight a slice.

Now despite being ultra-lightweight, there's no feeling of losing control or awareness of the club-head in your downswing.  Put a good swing on the D7 and it's legitimately going to deliver some hulking drives, and distance that gives other drivers a real run for their money.  Even when you miss the sweetspot, D7 gets down the fairway accurately and a long way.

A problem with many lightweight drivers is figuring out how to ideally blend weight and mass properties so you get performance benefits at impact, but also retain the ever important feel during your swing.  And Wilson is clearly using a legendary (like Coca Cola secret formula legendary) blueprint for making lightweight drivers that stand above the crowd.

Visually D7 is rounder than the classic pear-shaped driver, but definitely still inspires confidence once you've pegged your tee in the ground.  The sound at impact is strong and (for me at least) very pleasing.  Driver sound is a subjective area for sure, but D7 has a definite composite crown driver sound, only a bit louder.  Not so loud however that onlookers from the next hole will duck and take cover at impact.

D7 is one of Wilson's best distance drivers to date.  No gimmicks, just consistently long.  And in my opinion the best lightweight driver of the season.

PROS:
Effortless distance for even the slowest swing speeds
Three models will satisfy the performance needs of all skill levels
At $299 it's a ridiculously great value

CONS:
Some players will always believe lightweight or no adjustability means they're getting something less.

Today's D7 driver is RH and Regular Flex.  And remember you have three different ways to win the daily gifts in my giveaway this year.  On twitter just retweet my giveaway announcement and follow all; on Instagram like the post, follow all, and Repost or tag some friends; and here on my blog leave a comment in the section below in the daily review/giveaway articles.
