The USGA has announced the launch of a newly enhanced U.S. Open Augmented Reality (AR) App by Deloitte, designed to provide golf fans with an engaging and innovative experience for the 121st U.S. Open Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course – and for the first time – the 76th U.S. Women’s Open at The Olympic Club.
Available in the Apple App and Google Play Stores, U.S. Open AR offers the first-ever AR app experience for a major women’s sporting event and will give fans watching at home a variety of exciting ways to follow the action at both of this year’s championships. Torrey Pines and The Olympic Club will come to life on users’ mobile devices, allowing fans to follow the action in real-time with three-dimensional views of all 36 championship holes on both courses.
Fans will be able to locate players, compare their performance with anyone in the field and watch real-time shot tracking in augmented reality.
In addition to following the live action, fans can explore immersive tours of The Olympic Club clubhouse and The Lodge at Torrey Pines in 360 degrees. Fans will also have the opportunity to experience the epic 2008 U.S. Open playoff between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate in AR.
“This year we are looking forward to offering the same immersive AR experience that golf fans have come to love during the U.S. Open for both of our marquee championships,” said Navin Singh, USGA chief commercial officer. “Through our relationship with Deloitte we have been able to build a cutting-edge digital product that will place golf fans at the center of the action, allowing them to experience the drama and excitement of some of golf’s greatest championships like never before.”
To activate the experience, users simply download the app, scan a hard surface (table, countertop, etc.), and each course will appear in augmented reality on their phone or tablet screen. Users can then pinch the screen to zoom in on any part of the course and see how their favorite golfers are performing in real time.
“We are excited about the opportunity to continue to collaborate with the USGA to develop innovative ways for golf fans around the globe to connect with the U.S. Open and to expand the experience to include the U.S. Women’s Open,” said Allan Cook, Managing Director, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and Digital Reality Business Leader at Deloitte Digital. “By creating new and exciting ways to share the stories of the championships, we are helping to evolve the way golf fans connect with the game they love.”
In addition to its professional services work with the USGA, Deloitte supports USGA championships and initiatives, including programs that celebrate volunteerism and promote inclusion and innovation in and beyond the golf community.
This AR experience has been designed to complement the official U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Apps, which fans can download to access real-time scores, stats, highlights, live-streaming video, player tracking and more.
