LA Golf Face ID Driver Review - 10 Things to Know

The new LA Golf Face ID drivers are designed with unique bulge and roll (face curvature) based on swing speed to optimize side-spin and straighten off-center hits.

I've put the Face ID Driver to the test and can tell you my expectations were exceeded and there were even a few pleasant unexpected surprises.

Here are 10 things to know about the new LA Golf Face ID driver.

Number 1.  ▪️Carry, total yards, and ball speed are top-5 of all new drivers I’ve hit and only 5 yards shorter than longest driver I’ve hit.

Number 2.  ▪️One of the best drivers I’ve hit for tightest downrange dispersion from longest to shortest.

Number 3.  ▪️One of the lowest spinning drivers I’ve hit and even lower spinning than some LS heads.

Number 4.  ▪️Extremely forgiving in consistent distance, spin, and launch anywhere within a silver dollar size area of the diamond face area (just a massive sweet spot).

Number 5.  ▪️Bulge (obvious at address) significantly reduces gear effect side-spin on toe misses and reduces gear effect side-spin even more on heel misses.

Number 6.  ▪️When face is square at impact toe miss gear effect side-spin results in shots starting out further right and coming back like strong draws rather than out of control hooks.

Number 7.  ▪️ When face is square at impact heel miss gear effect side-spin results in shots starting out a little less further left but coming back nearly center-line straight taking big right miss out of play.

Number 8.  ▪️When face is open at impact toe miss side-spin results in shots that fade right instead of slicing right out of control.

Number 9.  ▪️Reduces open face slice spin better than close face hook spin but both still almost as good as limiting these kinds of spin as reducing gear effect spin.

Number 10.  ▪️Sounds more metallic like a Ping driver than the smooth, crack sound of a Titleist driver.

You’d think LA Golf has been making drivers forever this kind of great overall performance from Face ID. And the things I’d change are probably nitpicking but want to mention anyway.

First, even with the 65 gram shaft I almost always play in driver the overall feel throughout the swing feels lighter than other drivers.  I prefer a heavier feel and think LA Golf should consider an optional heavier weight in that bottom back area.  Speaking of shafts however you’re getting a premium LA Golf shaft stock with Face ID which is very cool.

Second, I usually play a 9° driver but went with a 10.5° 12-11 Face ID based on swing speed as LA Golf recommends.  And I can’t help but wonder if more bulge in the 9.5° 10-10 Face ID would be an even better performer even though I don’t fit their recommended swing speed.  I’d like to see LA Golf offer the different 12-11, 10-10, Face ID bulge and roll in more than one loft option.

If you're curious which of the five LA Golf Face ID drivers is best for you, LA Golf has designed a Face ID Quiz (like an online fitting tool) you can take here.
