USGA Allocates $1.9M in Golf Course Sustainability Research Grants for 2022

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has invested $1.9 million in grants to fund more than 80 research projects in 2022 through the Mike Davis Program for Advancing Golf Course Management – the largest private turfgrass and environmental research effort in golf’s history.

The USGA’s commitment to the program has totaled nearly $47 million since 1983, and the resulting sustainable management practices have contributed to a 20 percent decrease in water usage and a nearly 40 percent decrease in nutrient usage by golf courses in the last decade.

Silverado Resort and Spa to Host Top NCAA Women's Golf Teams at The Silverado Showdown

Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. will host top collegiate women golfers during The Silverado Showdown, Monday April 4th through Wednesday April 6th.

Co-hosted by University of Colorado and University of Oregon women’s golf programs, the 54-hole Silverado Showdown will feature four of the top 10 teams in the country, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Oregon, No. 5 San Jose State, and No. 8 Arizona State. Jim Richerson Named General Manager of The Riviera Country Club

Tom Weiskopf Designed Black Desert Resort Golf Course to Open Fall of 2022

The new Tom Weiskopf-designed Black Desert Resort Golf Course will open this fall in Ivins, Utah, a suburb of St. George. Set amid ancient black lava fields, the 18-hole resort/daily-fee facility is currently in the final phase of construction, with grassing underway. Troon®, the leader in providing golf and club-related leisure and hospitality services, will manage the golf operations, golf course agronomy, food and beverage, and marketing for the golf facility, the centerpiece of the 600-acre resort community. BGT Stability Tour Fire Putter Shaft Review - Consistently a More Stable Putting Stroke

Did you ever play the classic Operation game?  You're a doctor, Cavity Sam is your patient, and the only surgical tool you have to make Sam feel better is a pair of tweezers.  One wrong move and you get zapped.  It's a game of dexterity and the gist is you need steady hands to cure Sam of his ailments.

I mention this because the new BGT Stability Tour Fire putter shaft created a heightened feel of connection between my hands and the putter head.  It also removed excessive hand and wrist action from my stroke.  And for some crazy reason it reminded me of the game Operation.  The BGT Tour Fire shaft is the real deal and made my stroke consistently more stable.

Oakland Hills Country Club Selected to Host Six Additional USGA Championships

USGA, WGT Announce 2022 Lineup for eSports Grand Slam Presented by Lexus

The USGA and The R&A Move Walker Cup Match to Even Years Beginning in 2026

The USGA and The R&A today announced that the Walker Cup Match will be contested in even years from 2026 onward.

The shift moves the biennial men’s team match between Great Britain and Ireland and the USA away from the World Amateur Team Championships, which will be played in odd years beginning in 2023.

Waverley Country Club selected to host 2023 U.S. Senior Women’s Open

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced that Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore., will host the 5th U.S. Senior Women’s Open Championship, which will be played Aug. 24-27, 2023.

“The USGA and Waverley Country Club have worked closely together for decades, and it’s always exciting to return to a club where we have such robust women’s golf history,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA chief championships officer. “The U.S. Senior Women’s Open has been conducted at incredible venues, and we can’t wait to bring it to Oregon.”

Silverado Resort and Spa Named Regional Golf Course of The Year by NGCOA

Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. has been named the is (Region 4) by the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). Each year, the NGCOA recognizes the most outstanding members of the past year, and the individuals and organizations that have helped preserve the tradition of the game while embracing the challenges and opportunities of the golf business. Silverado and all NGCOA award winners were recognized during the 2022 Golf Business Conference, January 24-26, in Orlando, Fla.

The National and Regional Course of the Year Awards recognize golf courses that epitomize exceptional course quality and management excellence, make important contributions to their communities and the game, and are models of operations to its peers. Silverado Resort and Spa was selected for Region 4 and is the only golf facility west of the Mississippi to be honored. Other Regional Course of the Year winners include, Swansea Country Club in Swansea, Mass. (Region 1); Sweetgrass Golf Club at Island Resort & Casino in Harris, Mich. (Region 2); and Streamsong Red in Bowling Green, Fla. (Region 3). Sweetgrass Golf Club was recognized as the 2022 Jemsek National Course of the Year.

The governing bodies are continuing their work to assess potential future changes that address the long-term cycle of consistent increases in hitting distances. This results in course lengthening that threatens golf’s long-term sustainability and undermines the core principle that a broad and balanced set of skills should primarily determine success in golf.

USGA Announces USA Walker Cup Team Captains for 2023 and 2025

The USGA has announced that Mike McCoy, of Des Moines, Iowa, will captain the USA Team for the 2023 Walker Cup Match on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland and Nathan Smith, of Pittsburgh, Pa., will captain the USA Team for the 2025 Walker Cup Match at Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.

“Both Mike and Nathan have long, exceptional histories with the USGA and outstanding amateur golf resumes,” said Stu Francis, USGA president. “Given the historic nature of the next two matches being staged at St. Andrews and Cypress Point, we wanted to give both of them the time to enjoy this leadership opportunity and plan their next few years accordingly. We congratulate each of them on an honor well deserved and look forward to watching them lead two talented USA Teams.”

2023 U.S. Girls’ Junior Awarded to Eisenhower Golf Course at United States Air Force Academy

The USGA announced on Thursday that the Eisenhower Golf Course at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., will host the 2023 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, becoming the first golf course affiliated with a military academy to host a USGA championship. The Blue Course of the 36-hole facility was originally scheduled to host the 2020 U.S. Girls’ Junior before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it will now host the 74th edition of the championship on July 17-22, 2023.

“There was overwhelming enthusiasm when we announced that we would be bringing a USGA championship to the Air Force Academy, and like so many things impacted by the pandemic, it was incredibly disappointing to have to cancel,” said Tracy Parsons, championship director. “We couldn’t be more excited to have another date set on the calendar and are incredibly appreciative of Eisenhower Golf Course and the Colorado Golf Association for their continued support of the Girls’ Junior.”
