First images of the new 2022 Mizuno ST-G driver were seen at The Open Championship today. Weight track technology has returned, but on closer inspection there are some clear visible differences from the ST200G. The most notable being a third weight track in the back bottom of the driver.
The shape of the ST-G 220 head appears similar, but refined. It looks deeper and less rounded than the ST200G, which theoretically could improve stability and manipulate launch easier.
And the weight tracks themselves are also different. The two vertical weight tracks appear to be run deeper and shorter in the ST-G than the ST200G. Only speculating here, but guessing that's going to have an even greater effect on spin rates, and also do something to improve performance on mishits.
The big reveal though as mentioned is that additional weight track in the back. That's going to open up all kinds of performance benefits from increasing ball speed and stability to optimizing launch for a wider variety of players and swing types.
ST-G 220 will be available at retail in October, and you know I'll have all the details and on course impressions for you sometime before launch. Stay tuned.
