2nd U.S. Adaptive Open – Fact Sheet

The second U.S. Adaptive Open kicks off next week from Pinehurst No. 6.  The course was designed by George and Tom Fazio and opened in 1979.

Redesigns and restorations were done by Tom Fazio in 2005 to carve new bunkers, soften angles and seed faster greens. The nines will be reversed for championship play.

Pinehurst No. 6 will be set up to five separate yardages, to coincide with impairment categories.

WHO CAN ENTER

The championship is open to any professional or amateur golfer with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 36.4 who has an eligible impairment confirmed by a WR4GD Pass. Entries closed on May 3. The USGA accepted 285 entries for the second playing of this championship. 

FIELD COMPOSITION  

A player’s individual Handicap Index was the primary factor for determining the field. Committee selections were used to assure field balance and representation from key demographics.  

The field includes 96 players, with spots reserved for at least five male players and two female players per impairment category. Impairment categories are:

ABOUT THE U.S. ADAPTIVE OPEN 

Now in its second edition, this national championship showcases the world’s best golfers with disabilities. The U.S. Adaptive Open Championship serves as the USGA’s 15th national championship, showcasing and celebrating the adaptive golf community by providing them the stage to achieve their dreams and compete for a national championship. 

SCHEDULE OF PLAY

Eighteen holes of stroke play are scheduled each day from July 10 (Monday) through July 12 (Wednesday).  

COVERAGE 

Golf Channel will expand coverage of the 2nd U.S. Adaptive Open at Pinehurst No. 6 to include live reports from Andy Stevenson, near real-time highlight packages, player features produced by Golf Channel Films, and player interviews during Golf Today (1 to 3 p.m. EDT) and Golf Central (5 to 6 p.m. EDT) on Golf Channel from July 10-12. The final 30 minutes of Wednesday’s Golf Central will be dedicated to covering the U.S. Adaptive Open with live coverage of the trophy ceremony. 

In addition, the USGA will have in-depth coverage on usga.org that will include live scoring, video highlights, course information, written features, photos and video features, as well as daily highlight packages on its YouTube channel. 

WHAT THE WINNER RECEIVES  

Both a male and female overall champion will be crowned. 

Gold medal and custody of the U.S. Open Adaptive Open Trophy for one year 

Exemption into future U.S. Adaptive Opens (5 years for overall champion, one year for each impairment category winner) 

Name inscribed on a plaque recognizing all 2023 USGA champions that will reside in the Hall of Champions at the USGA Golf Museum
