A Club Champion Driver Fitting and ANY Custom Built Driver of Your Choice kicks off DAY 10 of my PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas. And you know I think a Club Champion fitting is one of the best things you can do for your game and one of the best experiences any golfer can have.
Every Club Champion fitting I've ever experienced has been absolutely enjoyable and beneficial because it's combined the best fitting technology with expert personalization. And I'd even call it a kind of hands-on learning experience.
In this article I'm going to take you through some of steps of my most recent Club Champion driver fitting in Warrensville Heights, Ohio with my fitter Mike and touch on some of the reasons why I think this is such a valuable and rewarding experience.
When you get to your Club Champion fitting your fitter will ask you questions and get to know you and your game. Right from the start Club Champion wants to get dialed in to your goals. And it's worth mentioning right from the start, big picture? It's always all about you. It's aways been a relaxing and engaging experience for me with Mike. There's no pressure to swing perfectly. Mike works with how I actually swing and that's what you can expect in your Club Champion fitting.
Trackman shows things like ball speed, spin rates, and launch angles and whether you're a deep dive numbers player or just want to see the end results it's still fascinating to see how small changes can affect your shots. And case in point in this driver fitting, I'm almost always fit into a particular driver shaft that I almost always am going to hit pretty well. Mike wanted to see if we can get even a little better and for the first time in years I rolled out of my fitting with a new shaft in my driver that had immediate and apparent performance benefits.
You'll hit a combination of heads, lofts, and shafts so your Club Champion fitter can keep tweaking your (eventual) ultimate build that works better than the club (or clubs) you came into your fitting with. A typical Club Champion driver fitting has me hit about 6 different shafts and 8 different heads and lofts. Even dialing in something as basic as spin and launch will optimize and maximize distance for you and your unique swing. A Club Champion fitting is a data-backed process under the watchful eye of your fitter that results in absolute proof of better performance.
So after you've warmed up and told your fitter what your goals are (more distance, accuracy, consistency, all of it) your Club Champion fitter will start your driver fitting by testing multiple different shafts. You'll hit different weights, different flexes, different bend profiles. You and your fitter will see and notice changes in feel, changes in timing, and changes in ball flight hitting the various shafts.
And speaking of shafts and variety, one company's stiff flex designation is not necessarily going to be the same as another company's stiff flex designation. The same can also be said about shaft profiles. One companies low-spin, mid-launch shaft can be higher spinning and launching than another companies low-spin, mid-launch designation. A Club Champion driver fitting takes the guesswork out of company flex and profile designations and fits a shaft best to your swing and tendencies.
So my miss is usually leaving the face open at impact. I'm okay with that generally but it leaves accuracy on the table obviously. Good shots that could be great shots. Bad shots that could be mediocre shots. But hey it's golf and golf is hard, right? Mike said not so fast Pete! And he put me into a new driver shaft that Trackman conformed was tightening my dispersion a bit, improving my consistency, and even giving me about 3+ MPH more ball speed! And maybe the best part of it all? My open face miss was becoming less pronounced and just a simple shaft change was allowing my same exact swing to close the driver face more at impact.
And even when I wasn't finding center of the face, "That's a great miss," Mike said when I was staying in the fairway where my previous head/shaft combo was putting me closer to or in the rough. And my good shots? I think Mike's reactions really paint the picture best, "Ooooh, Nice. Literally on the line. That was your fastest ball speed yet." When your Club Champion fitter tells you that how can you not smile?
Once you and your fitter see a particular shaft or two is best for (things like) your tempo, how and where you release driver, and angle of attack into impact you'll move on to testing different heads. Club Champion prioritizes shaft testing first because it helps determine what shaft profile works best for your swing and delivery. You can have a driver head that looks perfect to your eye, is the fastest and most forgiving head design in the history of club-making, sounds chef's kiss perfect to you. But if the shaft doesn't deliver that driver head into impact with optimized speed, accuracy, and consistency then you never realize those benefits.
I like to think of the driver head testing part of a Club Champion fitting as the fine-tuning stage. At this point Mike and I already knew what shaft was going to work best for my swing. So next we started hitting multiple driver heads to maximize distance performance for my unique swing. Different heads will produce different spin and different launch. You'll likely deliver all the various heads into impact consistently well with the shaft you were fit for earlier.
Mike quickly saw I needed a 9 degree head (rather than a 10 or 10.5 degree head) because I already launch the ball high enough for my swing speed. But there were still tweaks he could make to spin (low spin heads for example) to keep the ball in the air even just a little bit longer for me. We always hear things like high-launch, low-spin for the win. It really should be your-launch, your-spin for the win. If your launch is naturally a little low you need more spin to maximize carry. And Club Champion figures it all out for you.
In this stage (in my opinion at least) you're really maximizing ideal carry and total distance. Your fitter will also adjust loft and hosel settings, and look at lengths, swing weights, and discuss grip sizes with you. They're leaving no stone unturned squeeze out the last bit of ideal performance in this stage. At Club Champion close enough is never good enough. There's no guessing or average with anything they do. Your fitting is so thorough it's basically a complete interrogation of your swing.
I'd even go so far as saying Club Champion isn't satisfied with merely analyzing your swing and building a driver that's custom fit for you. Club Champion wants to introduce you to your driver soulmate.
