How much of the entire face of an iron can be forgiving? Can a single iron head design be customizable for various unique swings?
PXG is pushing these boundaries with their new 0311 GEN8 irons so they launch like a rocket and fit like a glove.
The PXG 0311 GEN8 T, P, and XP irons all are more hollowed from face to cavity to allow more spring effect at impact. The face simply flexes deeper into the head so more speed is created. And in fact so much speed was created during initial designs that it surpassed USGA ball speed limits. So PXG took weight from the perimeter of the irons and made the center face thicker to get it back to USGA maximum allowable ball speed.
So you might be thinking what does it matter how you achieve maximum allowable ball speed? Thinner face or deeper hollow body with thicker face, who cares? Well that's how PXG was able to also make the outer perimeter of the 0311 GEN8 irons incredibly fast.
The thicker face in the center comes from weight savings (removed) in the perimeter. That allowed PXG to make the perimeters of 0311 GEN8 irons thinner (the traditional way to gain ball speed).
And the result is an astounding retention in ball speed over a significantly larger area of the face. PXG says GEN8 has achieved a 30-percent improvement in speed retention around the perimeter of the face.
Also new to the PXG 0311 GEN8 irons is the Dual Perimeter Weighting System. This allows you to move heavier or lighter weights into the heel or toe and have a significant effect on face path at impact. So for example, if your tendency is an open face at impact then a heavier weight in the heel area speeds the face closed through impact. Conversely is you tend to close the face through impact then a heavier weight in the toe area slows down the face from closing too much. Ultimately GEN8 puts weight in the head where it best fits and benefits your unique swing.
The groundbreaking PXG® 0311 GEN8 Irons are ultimately engineered to give you everything PXG knows about iron design. Maximum ball speed, dialed-in precision, and unmatched feel across three distinct head designs. And each of the three models feature PXG’s most advanced materials and manufacturing processes to date setting a new benchmark for PXG irons total control.
Backed by years of research and development and tour-validated innovation, PXG 0311 GEN8 Irons integrate QuantumCORTM (PXG’s proprietary polymer), Deep Core Recoil Technology (for explosive face flexion), Dual Perimeter Weighting System (for unprecedented adjustability mentioned above), as well as internal high-density tungsten weighting, ultra-thin maraging steel faces, and a refined Power Channel geometry. Each new GEN8 iron is also five-times forged from 8620 soft carbon steel and finished with robotic polishing to ensure exacting geometry and consistency.
"GEN8 shows how far craftsmanship in golf has evolved," said Gary Player, Golf Legend and PXG Ambassador. "These irons blend true performance engineering with incredible attention to detail."
The new Dual Perimeter Weighting System represents a major leap forward in iron adjustability and also gives fitters unprecedented control over center-of-gravity placement and swing weight. Repositioning mass to the perimeter increases the moment of inertia (MOI) making them more stable and forgiving. But it also allows the above mentioned precise heel-toe (CG) tuning with the interchangeable weights. And even a subtle shift of mass towards the toe or heel influences face position at impact and will allow you to achieve more consistent start lines even before any lie-angle adjustments are made.
Player testing has confirmed the performance benefits of this approach, with nearly all golfers being able to distinguish between weight configurations and all experiencing a measurable change in face-to-path at impact. The result is tighter dispersion, improved directional control, and more consistent turf interaction, delivering a smoother strike and more repeatable ball flight customized through the club fitting process.
"The feel is pure, and the distance is impressive," said Marco Penge, PXG PGA TOUR Professional. "GEN8 delivers the kind of performance you notice immediately."
Offered in three models - PXG 0311 GEN8 T (Tour), PXG 0311 GEN8 P (Players), and PXG 0311 GEN8 XP (Xtreme Performance) – the lineup allows golfers to dial in the ideal combination of launch, distance, spin, and forgiveness for their game.
Back by popular demand, the GEN8 T Iron features a compact head shape and minimal offset for ultimate workability and precision favored by elite ball strikers. The GEN8 P Iron delivers a mid-size profile with balanced forgiveness and control, offering exceptional versatility for a wide range of players. For golfers seeking maximum distance, the GEN8 XP Iron combines increased offset, a wider sole, and strong loft to produce explosive, confidence-inspiring performance.
"With GEN8, we focused on elevating every performance variable without compromise," said Mike Nicolette, Sr. Director of Irons Research & Development at PXG. "From the polymer to the face architecture to the weighting system, every element works together to maximize energy transfer, tighten dispersion, and deliver the soft, responsive feel golfers expect from PXG."
PXG 0311 GEN8 Irons are designed to offer stability through impact and total control, whether attacking pins or maximizing carry yardages. LPGA Tour Professional Megan Khang concluded, "GEN8 gives me the precision I rely on."
All models are offered in Chrome and Xtreme Dark and can be custom fitted at PXG retail stores, fitting studios, or through PXG Mobile Fitters nationwide. To book your fitting visit www.PXG.com.
