2023 Play With Pete Invitational at Scioto Country Club - How to Sign Up and All the Details

The legendary Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio is a cathedral of golf.  It's hosted the most prestigious tournaments and competitions in the world.  Scioto's distinctive course architecture evokes the Golden Age of early American golf.  Luminaries of the game have competed and won here including the likes of Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus.

And on August 2nd, four of you will become a part of Scioto Country Club's storied 107 year history and leave your own footprints on this hallowed ground.

The moment you step foot on Scioto Country Club it becomes a part of your being.  You feel the history in your bones.  Breathe in the air and the ghosts of legends who played here will speak to your soul.  This is the kind of course that sends you back in time with sloping fairways, slanted greens, and masterful bunkering.  Scioto CC is a perfectly manicured labyrinth maze with pitfalls lurking at every corner and the most satisfying rewards if you maneuver around with skill and poise.

Bobby Jones won the second of his four U.S. Open Championships at Scioto CC in 1926.  Walter Hagen captained the United States to Ryder Cup victory here in 1931 (the second Ryder Cup contested on U.S. soil).  And in the early 1950's a 10 year-old Jack Nicklaus grew up playing and learning the game at Scioto CC.  This is really where Jack learned to become Jack.

Scioto was the petri dish that awakened Nicklaus' passion for golf and forged his competitive nature.  And Jack has said on many occasions that growing up on a course that hosted the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, and 1950 PGA Championship gave him a definite advantage in knowing how champions play different holes.

Nicklaus listened to Scioto members talk of Jones hitting it here or making a putt from there in the 1926 U.S. Open.  And Jack spent hours upon hours pretending to compete with his idols, having to make shots or putts to beat Jones or Hogan.  Some years later as Jack's immense talent and promise blossomed, Jones would say after meeting Jack for the first time "that Ohio strong boy has the finest potential of any young player in many years."

Legends of all generations have fond memories and reverence for this 1916 Donald Ross design on Riverside Drive.  And Scioto Country Club also holds the distinction of being one of only five courses in history to host the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, and U.S. Amateur.  The other four are Hazeltine, Oak Hill Country Club (East), Oakland Hills Country Club (North), and Pinehurst Resort No. 2.

The inaugural Play with Pete Invitational was at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2018 and it's grown astronomically ever since.  So much so that we're looking at something like a PGAPappas Tour much sooner than later, with Play With Pete Invitationals multiple times a year from historic courses all around the country.  We've also played this event at Inverness Club, Pasatiempo Golf Club, and the Kiawah Resort Ocean Course.  And interest keeps growing from courses, sponsors, partners, and of course the stars - you, to be a part of Play With Pete.

The last few years alone, I've received over 1,000 emails and DMs on twitter and Instagram to participate in each Play With Pete Invitational, and I'm especially excited about this year's edition from Scioto. I can promise you right now Scioto Country Club will be an anchor site for Play With Pete Invitationals moving forward.  By any and every standard or measure Scioto is one of the world's greatest venues.

Scioto Country Club has undergone multiple and drastic renovations since its establishment in 1916.  In the 1960s some of the greens were raised and rebuilt to provide better drainage.  Years later in another renovation greens were moved closer to water and greenside and fairway bunkers were relocated to make shots more challenging.  Even the natural topography of the course was reshaped. And eventually the uniqueness and variety of the original Donald Ross design was sacrificed.

So in 2019 Scioto Country Club membership approved a $7M master plan and Ross-inspired restoration led by Andrew Green.  And today Scioto green complexes, slopes, shapes, sizes, and all surrounding areas are again 1916 Ross authentic in stunning detail.  With history as the primary focus fairways and bunkers were also adjusted and rebuilt to recapture the 1916 originality and wealth of options available for players of all skill levels from tee to green.

I'll have a full course review for you detailing the gloriously restored Scioto in the coming weeks.  Consider it a roadmap for those of you following along with Play With Pete and and local knowledge for the players competing.  Before and after photos will illustrate how shapes and positioning of critical course features once again make Scioto Country Club its dynamic Mona Lisa self.

Play With Pete Invitational at Scioto Country Club will be Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023.  When the players arrive they'll meet and greet and I'll start handing out some of the swag they'll be receiving (more on that in a bit).

Your day will start with a tour of the spectacular Scioto Clubhouse (which could legitimately be called a museum).  It's absolutely fascinating and feel free to take photos and videos throughout.  I'll also be capturing pictures and videos of the four players throughout the entire day.

You'll also know what it's like to be a pro golfer for a day, because you're going to be sponsored by some of the biggest names in golf.  And you want to buckle up for this one.

FootJoy will be providing all the players with polos, pants, shoes, and gloves.  You'll be able to choose any styles from the #1 Shoe and #1 Glove in golf you want.  Pick from Premiere Series. Pro/SL, Pro/SL Carbon, HyperFlex, whatever you want.  I'll have your outfits waiting for you on arrival so you can walk this historic course in perfect comfort and style.

Titleist will be providing brand new TSR drivers, stand bags, and all the golf balls you need.  Yeah... I just said brand new custom fit TSR drivers baby!  After players are selected I'll have them get fit near their homes for the Titleist driver that's best for their game.  When they arrive at Scioto County Club I'll hand out these new custom fit TSR's.  Stand on a tee box with a TSR driver in your hands and you breathe in courage and exhale fear.  Titleist is making sure you're ready to take on Scioto.

All the players will also have new Titleist stand bags waiting for them at Scioto.  You know the bags I'm talking about. Feature-rich bags with mouthwatering good looks that give you the perfect combination of proven performance and reliable construction round after round after round.

It's about armament and ammunition for Titleist so players will also get to choose from the new Pro V1, Pro V1x, Pro V1x Left Dash, AVX, or whatever Titleist ball model they play.  And this year the Titleist balls will once again have the PGAPappas logo as you loved these the last time.  There might even be more Titleist swag for the players but I'm going to keep it a secret for now because honestly it's going to be wildly fun and I want to see the shocks on everyone's face live and in person.

Like always I'm going to capture all the action not only for the players but also for everyone following along on twitter and Instagram.  The entire event will be livestreamed and I'll also have pics, videos, player interviews, jubilant triumphs, crushing defeats, and some incredible insight into Scioto's championship personality throughout the day.

We'll even have chances for all of you following along to win prizes, as well at surprise contests for the players competing.  Titleist balls, FootJoy shoes, and more.  It's going to be an absolutely unforgettable day and insanely amazing experience for all.

After the round is finished, we'll all regroup back at the Scioto Clubhouse to have dinner, drinks, share stories about the day in the 1916 Room (overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green), and no doubt have memories and new friendships that will last a lifetime.

So how do you enter to join my Play with Pete Invitational at Scioto Country Club?  Same as it's always been.  Just leave a comment here on my blog or on twitter or Instagram, or DM me, or email me and tell me why you want to be one of the four players to join this event and play at Scioto CC.  (NOTE: Because of the volume of entries coming in and wanting to read and reply to all of you, I'll only be able to accept entries through this Saturday, July 8th.)

Over the last five years I've read messages from people in every state in the U.S., even from other countries wanting to join Play with Pete.  And again for this one, I welcome everyone from all over the world.  You'll have to make your own transportation to get here, but once you step on Scioto Country Club grounds, it's all taken care of and just get ready for the time of your life.

It's that simple, I'll read every single comment, DM, or email, and I'll announce the four players on Monday, July 10th.

A storied championship pedigree.  An architectural masterpiece rich in challenge, tradition, and lore.  And a history of the game's greatest players atop it all.  Be brave.  Be bold.  Scioto Country Club glory awaits.

  1. I will enter every one of these until the end of time just to be able to potentially enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to play a world class course and be alongside the legend himself, Pete. Have loved following your account for many years and participating in various giveaways, but to be able to play such a renowned course all because of the power of Twitter/Instagram would take the cake. As these Invitationals get bigger every year my desire to play in one only grows! The way you cover not only equipment but the men and women’s game of golf is so fun to read about and I always feel like I’m there with you on site during your reviews/interviews. Thanks in advance for the trip to Scioto Country Club👊

    1. Oh and can’t forget to mention the opportunity to see where Jack learned the game and hit some of the same shots he did (probably not as crisp though) would be invaluable to this golf fan!

    2. Thanks for your message Ryder. Very thoughtful and put a smile on my face. It's why we're all here right? To have fun and do fun things together. You guys motivate me more than I can possibly tell you. And yeah Jack's vibe is everywhere at Scioto. Everything about this place is magical. 👍😀

  2. Much like the Masters Ticket draw, I mark this day to try and earn 1 of these coveted spots in the Play with Pete. I don't get the chance to play much outside of my home state so an opportunity to play on a course with this much history would be amazing. Win or lose, I will be following along as these events you do are amazing and help grow the game. I look forward to your reviews, especially on items that I am in the market for. Thanks for the opportunity!

  4. I would absolutely love to be one of the four players at this year's Play With Pete Invitational at Scioto Country Club! Just reading this Blog Post has me fired up to read more about this amazing golf course and country club, and getting to play there with you and a few others would be a once in a lifetime golf experience. So count me in, if I'm not selected I'll definitely be following along from home, but for now I'm going with "So you're saying I have a chance!"

  5. Playing at Scioto CC would be great at my age and handicap. I began to get a feel for golf serving overseas in the Navy. That’s never stopped and I’ll always find a friend in golf. Most of all golf is a sport for all ages. It’s fun, exciting, challenging, frustrating and keeps us coming back.

  6. Being selected as 1 of 4 winners to participate in this year's Play with Pete Invitational would be an honor! Being born and raised in Ohio, I've heard plenty of tales from Scioto Country Club but never imagined getting the opportunity to play there! I've followed your account for many years and was so excited when the company I work for hired a "Pappas" because I thought there might have been a relation to you (sadly there wasn't). Hope to get a chance at a once in a lifetime event!

    1. Thanks for your message Jeff and when I read Pappas I was wondering if we were related too. :) And can tell you Scioto lives up to and even exceeds all the tales. Everything is awe-inspiring. The course, the history, the players who competed here. And of course restored back to its Donald Ross roots. Just spectacular. 😀👍

  7. While the reasons to want to be chosen for Play With Pete number in the dozens or more, I’ll narrow it down to the top few: to have the amazing opportunity to play a world famous Donald Ross design finally restored to its original glory, where Jack learned to be a champion no less; to get to play this gem in new Footjoy swag head to toe and with a new Titleist boomstick; to make a few new friends who are as obsessed with this crazy game as I am; and honestly probably most of all to shake the hand of our hero and the guy we all live vicariously through, Pete Pappas! For us golfaholics, you’re a mix of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the fun uncle we all wish we had all wrapped up in one! All of those factors combined make for an absolutely unforgettable day that any of us would be so lucky to have. Just to be considered is wonderful, to actually be chosen would truly be a memory to last a lifetime! Thanks for all the awesome stuff you do to give us the average Joe golfers a chance to feel like a tour pro for a day! You the man Pete!

    1. Haha, funny you mention fun uncle Bp because one of my nicknames is CAP... for Crazy Uncle Pete. :) And I certainly appreciate your kind words, but as you know it's all about you guys for me. Every single day you all make me smile and it just makes me want to do everything I do as best I can and with as much energy as I have. And yes Scioto Play With Pete is going to be absolutely nuts. I keep saying it but the course and history and championship pedigree just grab you and don't let go. It's truly a special, special place. 😀👍

  10. I would welcome the opportunity to scratch this off my bucket list. I only live a couple hours from Columbus, Ohio and have a good friend who has had the privilege to play this legendary course. It would be cool to share stories like he does about this Top 100 course.

  11. Great read on Scioto CC. This place not only has great amenities, but a history to go with it. To be able to play a course like this would be a memory that would last a lifetime. I have been playing the game of golf for over 30 years now and to be able to participate in something like this would be incredible. I have played over 100 golf courses in my life but nothing with the stature of this one. Just playing the game itself with friends, family, or even just someone you are paired up with in a random round is a great day. To be able to do that here, memory of a lifetime. Thanks for all you do Pete.

That's the heart of Play With Pete. Getting a group together on a historic course with great sponsors and having the kind of day that lasts a lifetime! 😀👍

  13. Pete,
I’m sure you’ll have a ton of comments to read, so I’m going to keep this simple.

I want to play in your tournament for two reason. First, I’d love to play golf with you and on Scioto! I’m sure you, the course and our foursome would produce some once in a lifetime memories! And at my age, that’s saying quite a bit!

Secondly and more importantly, I’d like to help out the junior golf program in the Chicagoland area by either donating the equipment you provide or giving it to them for a fundraiser, such as an auction or charity tournament prizes. Being retired and on a fixed income I don’t have as many chances as others to ‘grow the game” and “pay it forward” to upcoming generations of golfers!

So that’s it in a nutshell. A win-win for me and some youngsters who are golf’s future. The only loser might be you for having to put up for an entire round, my ungodly backswing and my corny “dad” jokes!

In closing, thanks for running the contest and here’s to your continued success!

    Best,
    Rich

Once in a lifetime memory is always what we're trying to go for with Play With Pete and this one from Scioto CC is going to be absolutely incredible. I also appreciate and admire your junior golf commitment, respect the past and lift up the future. All in on that. Still reading and replying to everyone here and on twitter and on Instagram. Going round the clock and everyone's messages and replies and emails have been out of this world awesome. 😀👍

  14. Golf is the best! I love it, and being from Columbus, OH originally I’d love nothing more than to come home to play a round. My wife and I just had our first child, she’s a beauty! But opportunities to Golf look different these days, as you might imagine, so I’m hoping to have a great excuse to get out there and play!

Wow this would be amazing. As someone who very rarely gets to play at exclusive clubs (especially with 2 little ones) it would be the round of a lifetime. I’d be a great partner and would provide a lot of fun and laughs. It would be so fun to rep some new gear and go bird huntin!

    1. Hi Alex, all in on birdie hunting baby! But even the great Bobby Jones missed the green all four rounds here at Scioto in the 1926 U.S. Open. Just saying. :) What it's all about though you nail on the head. Lot of fun and laughs with a group of players on an epic historic course and fantastic partners. Play With Pete Invitational from Scioto CC baby! Yeah it's middle of the morning here but I'm pumped baby! 😀👍

  18. Pete,
What a tremendous opportunity, not only to play a history rich venue, but bringing 4 folks together to have a once in a lifetime experience. Pete my friend you are going above and beyond this time. This isn’t just a quick 18 at a storied course, this is learning the history, soaking up little known facts, fellowship with new friends, getting a tour like experience, for some experiencing having a caddy for the first time, all being wrapped up with a bow. Tremendous opportunity for 4 folks and I wish all the best of luck and thank you for the opportunity. PWPScioto

    Pete-
The lore of Scioto, the legends who have graced the greens of past and those who grace them now(you). What a way to spend the day walking the hallowed grounds that is Scioto.

    Self-less /selflas/
    adjective-
concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own; unselfish
"an act of selfless devotion" or the man that is Pete Pappas

Best of luck to those who have been and will be graced by Pete's generous acts of selflessness
