42nd U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship - Meet the Semifinalists

The 2023 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship two semifinal matches begin on Thursday will at 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. EDT, followed by the first 18 of the 36-hole championship match, which is scheduled for noon.

Here's a deeper look at the four semi-finalist who remain.

Evan Beck, 32, of Virginia Beach, Va.

• No. 85 in World Amateur Golf Ranking®/WAGR®

• Playing in his 10th USGA championship and second U.S. Mid-Amateur

• Made seven birdies in his quarterfinal round win over Sam Jones

• Advanced to the Round of 32 in last year’s Mid-Amateur at Erin Hills

• Defeated 2019 Mid-Amateur runner-up Joseph Deraney in the Round of 16

• Played in four U.S. Amateurs and was runner-up in the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur

• Chosen Virginia State Golf Association Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022

• Runner-up in this year’s George L. Coleman Invitational at Seminole Golf Club

• Two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection while playing at Wake Forest University

• In 2021, he won the Virginia State Open and Virginia State Mid-Amateur

• He and partner Dan Walters were 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball semifinalists

Stewart Hagestad, 32, of Newport Beach, Calif.

• One of six players to win multiple U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships (2016, 2021)

• Also reached Mid-Am semifinals in 2018 and 2019 and owns a 26-4 match-play record in championship

• Ranks eighth is career U.S. Mid-Amateur match-play victories and is one behind 2013 champion Michael McCoy

• Member of four winning USA Walker Cup Teams (2017, 2019, 2021, 2023)

• Won a gold medal in the mixed team competition of the 2019 Pan American Games

• Low amateur in the 2017 Masters Tournament and was first invited Mid-Am champion to make the 36-hole cut

• Competed in four U.S. Opens and finished 64th in 2022 at The Country Club, in Brookline, Mass.

• Made an up-and-down par from rough near a greenside bunker to win his quarterfinal match

• Reached the Round of 32 at Erin Hills last year in his first Mid-Amateur

• Won 2023 Carolinas Mid-Amateur with a 54-hole score of 199, including a second-round 63

• Tied for third in this year’s John T. Lupton Memorial at The Honors Course in Tennessee

• In 2022, he was fifth in the South Carolina State Amateur and second in the Picard Cup

• Chosen 2022 South Carolina Golf Association Player of the Year

• Earned a degree in business management from Presbyterian College

• Defeated stroke-play medalist Jeronimo Esteve in this year’s Round of 32

• Made a winning par on No. 17 to win his match in the quarterfinal round

• Played in six U.S. Amateurs and three U.S. Amateur Public Links

• One of two players in 2023 U.S. Amateur who also played in the 2012 Amateur, both at Cherry Hills Country Club

• Runner-up in 2023 Mississippi State Amateur and 2022 Mississippi State Mid-Amateur

• Two-stage qualifier for 2011 U.S. Open Championship at Congressional Country Club

• Three-time all-conference selection at Middle Tennessee State University between 2010-15

• Teaches cost and financial accounting at the University of Mississippi

• Working on his Ph.D. in accounting at Ole Miss and is a certified public accountant
