When LA Golf launched their first driver this spring they promised a revolutionary design as the first ever driver with a face and shaft to match your swing speed. And it only took a few swings with my new LA Golf Face ID driver to learn they were on to something special. I reviewed Face ID driver for you earlier this year and it exceeded lofty expectations.
You’d honestly think LA Golf has been making drivers forever with the kind of great overall performance I got from Face ID. So to kick off DAY 5 of my PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas Golf Giveaway let's get one of you into ANY Custom Built LA Golf Face ID Driver you want! I highly recommend you take this LA Golf Face ID Quiz (like an online fitting tool) to help you decide what driver head, face, and shaft are the best for you.
I'm going to touch on some things about the LA Golf Face ID driver to help you in your choice and also tell you a few things about some of the incredible performance I had with it this year.
The new LA Golf Face ID drivers are designed with unique bulge and roll (face curvature) based on swing speed to optimize side-spin and straighten off-center hits. And these different face curvatures for various swing speeds reduce side spin and correct mishits leading to more consistent straight shots for any golfer and any skill level.
Bulge and roll is basically face curvature. Bulge is the curve from toe to heel, and roll is the curve from top to bottom. And rounding the contours of the entire face has a direct effect on spin and launch on mishits. Without bulge and roll accuracy and distance performance on mishits would suffer tremendously.
If your driver face was perfectly flat mishits low on the face would create low launch, high spin, and poor distance. But designing vertical and horizontal curve into the face allows a manipulation of loft, spin, and even ball speed to deliver distance on mishits that more closely approximates center strikes.
Similarly, if our drivers were perfectly flat misses out towards the toe would create excessive sidespin that causes shots to veer off course. With vertical and horizontal curve in the face however sidespin is reduced and even starts shots further left or right manipulating spin to bring flight closer to intended targets.
Now let’s be clear, all drivers have bulge and roll. But LA Golf believes they've unlocked a technology and design that will revolutionize driver performance. And call me a believer. Here's some of what I experienced playing the LA Golf Face ID driver this year.
I was fit into the LA Golf Face ID 12-11, 4S, DJ Series shaft. And my carry, total yards, and ball speed were all in the top-5 of all new drivers I hit this year (and only about 5+ yards shorter than longest driver I hit). It was an absolute bomber for me and also one of the best drivers for tightest downrange dispersion from longest to shortest. It sounds more metallic like a Ping driver than the smooth, crack sound of a Titleist driver.
My LA Golf Face ID was also one of the lowest spinning drivers I played this year (even lower spinning than some LS heads). And yet at the same time it was extremely forgiving in consistency of distance, spin, and launch anywhere within a silver dollar size area of the diamond face area. Truly a massive sweet spot.
Side-spin on toe misses with my LA Golf Face ID was clearly reduced and even more-so on heel misses. On shots where my face was square at impact toe misses legitimately started out further right and then came back in like strong draws instead of out-of-control hooks. On shots where my face was square at impact heel misses resulted in shots starting out a little less further left and coming back nearly center-line straight (which takes that big right miss out of play).
And on shots with my LA Golf Face ID where my face was open at impact? Toe miss side-spin resulted in shots that were playable fades instead of out-of-control slices. I found this driver reduced open face slice spin better than close face hook spin. But in both instances this driver was almost as good in limiting these kinds of spin as they were in reducing gear effect spin mentioned above.
LA Golf's Face ID driver tailoring face design (and shaft) to your swing speed offers a real advantage to every type of swing. And I absolutely hit my drives straighter with my Face ID 12-11 driver than many others I played this year. If you are looking for forgiveness in a driver with straighter dispersion on all your misses and not have to sacrifice distance? LA Golf Face ID has a driver for you.
