Edel Golf SMS Forged Wedge Review: 2022 PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas Golf Giveaway DAY 4

From players on professional Tours to weekend warriors the short game is your most important tool.  And Edel Golf has designed a groundbreaking wedge with removable weight technology that will help anyone hit the ball closer to those hard to reach pins and spin the ball like it was attached to a yoyo.

Edel's new SMS wedges allow you to move around three different weights that ultimately fit the wedge to your unique swing and game.  And one of you will win a custom set of three (3) Edel SMS wedges.  You can choose any loft (between 48 and 60 degrees), any of four fantastic grinds, and any flex.  I'll help the winner figure out what combination might be best for their game.

I already told you all about the Edel SMS wedges on social media, but I'm going to bring it all together here for you and hit on some of the reasons why SMS are game changing wedges.  And as big a story as the removable weights are, I think the grind story is especially big in its own right.

The simplest way to start is to tell you the SMS wedge adjustable weights affect spin, launch, feel, and accuracy when you move them around in each of the three wedge ports.  Changing weights legit creates substantial differences in just about every performance category, and even feel during the swing as well as impact.

So why is this important?  Well most companies create wedges that are optimized for maximum spin and particular feel and trajectory.  And moving weight around is one of the ways they accomplish hitting those spin rates and launch characteristics.  But this doesn't really account for different and unique swing types.  And the Edel Golf SMS removable weight system does.

Say a wedge is optimized for low trajectory by adding weight to the top.  This isn't going to help a player who already hits the ball low or who wants to hit it higher (and vice verse).  Or say a wedge is designed for maximum stability or forgiveness with some kind of perimeter weighting.  This isn't going to help players who come into impact steep or shallow the same way.  It's not going to create that ideal performance the same way for players who hold their lag and cast the club early.  Edel SMS wedge weight technology however accounts for all swing types.

Edel SMS wedges have one heavy 8 gram weight and two lighter 2 gram weights.  And there's not a specific location in any of the three ports to maximize spin or maximize accuracy.  For some players the heavy weight in the toe will result in the best overall performance.  For others the heavy weight in the heel or center will be ideal.  You'll have to test and figure it out yourself.  But the point is there is a unique combination of weight placement that will unlock your short game potential like you've never known was possible.

And I can give you a few general examples.  I found all weight combinations gave me great backspin, a floor of great spin if you will.  That's primarily because of the full face groove and type of microgroove design Edel uses in SMS (more on that later).  But a particular weight setting actually gave me more back spin while a different weight setting gave me less.  It was nuts.

Different weight positions also affected dispersion significantly.  This was the biggest WOW for me.  In my opinion SMS weight technology has it's most obvious affect on sidespin and trajectory.  And this kind of SMS accuracy tuning can mean the difference between hitting or missing a green, or putting from 10 feet versus 20 feet.

SMS wedges are forged from a Japanese1025 carbon steel so the feel is soft and deep.  And taking feel one step further, I found changing weights also affects the feel at impact, almost like there's less vibration or more vibration.  Changing weight positions also changed feel during my actual swing.  One configuration in particular gave me a greater sensation of control and awareness of the club head through my swing.  Really a change in swing path to be honest.  Again just nuts.

As mentioned above spin is fantastic.  Edel uses full face grooves so you get maximum spin on full shots, when you open up the face on touch shots, and even on those rare occasions you miss the sweet spot.

Subtle diamond grooves all over the face also increase friction for even more spin.  Trust me when I tell you, you'll have no problem getting spin with the SMS wedges.  And when you find your right weight configuration that will mean also controlling all that spin.

I mentioned above the SMS wedge sole grinds are a big story as well.  And I found the grinds to not only be significantly different (and therefore particularly useful from a variety of lies), but also to be some of the most effective grinds of their kind of the many wedges I've used and played in my life.  I really love these grinds and will touch on the three I chose below.  You can read about what Edel says about all four different grinds here.

I chose Edel's C-Grind for my SMS 52 degree gap wedge.  The C-Grind is low bounce and versatile for a variety of shots.  To my eye it sits in a way that makes me believe I'm going to execute whatever shot I'm trying to pull off.  And it's even taken frustration out of shots hit from the thicker, higher rough that torments us all.  I even pull this for delicate chips and pitches from closely mown areas.

For my SMS 56 degree sand wedge I went with the V-Grind, which I think is ideal for bunkers and juicy rough.  This is a grind that just gets in and easily pops balls up and out of hazards and other junk.  Shallow swings or chop and axe it's so effective I'd almost call it a game-improvement grind.

Finally, for my SMS 60 degree lob wedge I chose T-grind.  This grind has been great for shots where I want the face open, and particularly great from tight lies.  And again this just sits in a way that makes me confident in how the ball will react.

For players of all skill levels snuggling a wedge up close to the hole is a thrill.  Watching it disappear into the hole even better.  And Edel Golf wants you to know - you don't need world class talent for your short game to shine.  You just need SMS forged wedges to match your swing.  Well done, Edel.

Remember you always have three different ways to win the daily gifts in my giveaway this year.  On twitter just retweet my giveaway announcement and follow all; on Instagram repost, mention in your story, or like, and follow all; and here on my blog leave a comment in the section below in the daily review/giveaway, Jingle Bam, and Letters from Santa articles.

These gifts are great prizes of course, but also some of the best equipment and gear in their class that I played and reviewed this season.  And I hope these mini reviews and recaps give you an idea of why I rate them so highly.

Merry Christmas all!

  20. I’m a believer in the Edel system. I own the 5 mallet style putter and have had great success seems to be set perfectly. This is why I believe the three weights in the wedges would be perfect. I am extremely interested in the irons but need to think on the configuration. Difference is getting a gap and approach and get irons or the wedges and more irons. Fitting also

    1. Honestly it's wild. And I didn't mention in review but in a sense these are game improvement wedges because say someone always misses on toe - you put heavy weight out there and you're putting the sweet spot (kind of) in the place where that person misses.
