Andy Ogletree Stuns John Augenstein To Claim 2019 U.S. Amateur Crown

After trailing for a majority of the 36-hole championship match, Andy Ogletree surged past John Augenstein, winning four of the last seven holes to claim the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship title, 2 and 1, at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. 

 

Ogletree, 21, of Little Rock, Miss., was 4 down through five holes, but chipped away at Augenstein's lead throughout the afternoon, completing one of the largest comebacks in a U.S. Amateur final.  The senior at Georgia Tech made just two bogeys over 35 holes in the final, equaling the mark set by 2008 champion Danny Lee and 2017 runner-up Doug Ghim. 

Justin Thomas What's In The Bag WITB: The Golf Equipment Thomas Used to Win the 2019 BMW Championship

Justin Thomas set a course record (61) at Medinah CC on Saturday at the BMW Championship, and then on Sunday put the finishing touches on his 10th career win shooting 4-under (68) for a 25-under total. 

 

The win put Thomas in the driver's seat heading into the FedExCup Playoff finale for the Tour Championship at East Lake.  Thomas won the FedExCup in 2017, and if he can do it again, he'll join Tiger Woods as the only players to win more than once in its 13 year history. 

Mitsubishi Golf Shafts Win the BMW Championship and Czech Masters

Another week on the PGA and European Tours is in the books.  And another couple of Mitsubishi golf shafts to go hand-in-hand with the victories. 

 

Justin Thomas won the BMW Championship using a Mitsubishi shaft in his driver, securing the No. 1 spot in the FedExCup playoffs heading into the final next week in Atlanta.  And over on the European Tour Thomas Pieters won the D+D Real Czech Masters also using a Mitsubishi shaft in his driver.

John Augenstein and Andy Ogletree Set to Clash in 119th U.S. Amateur Final

With their victories on Saturday John Augenstein and Andy Ogletree earned berths in the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot G.C., as well as invitations to the 2020 Masters Tournament. And Sunday the 21-year old college seniors will square off in the 36-hole final of the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. 

 

The winner tomorrow will also earn a spot on the 2019 USA Walker Cup Team and in the 2020 Open Championship, conducted by The R&A.  But the competitors took vastly different paths on Saturday to reach the championship match.

119th U.S. Amateur Features All-American Semifinals

There are four players remaining in the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.  And even for the players who don't win it all, their next win to put them in the finals will mean an invitation to the 2020 Masters and U.S. Open. 

 

Cohen Trolio, of West Point, Miss., won his last three holes against Austin Squires, advancing past the No. 64 seed, 3 and 1, to continue his incredible run in this tournament.  At 17 years and 8 days, Trolio is the youngest semifinalist since at least 1993, when age records were first kept.

Meet the Quarterfinalists in the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship

The quarterfinal round of the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship is set to begin Friday, and the eight remaining young guns have only each other and the 100-year old Donald Ross layout between them and stardom. 

 

Play will begin at Pinehurst at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, and televised on FS1 from 4-7 p.m.  The winners advance to Saturday afternoon's semifinals, beginning at 2:15.  And the 36-hole championship match will be played over Course No. 4 and Course No. 2, with the morning round starting at 9 a.m.  Coverage on Fox Saturday and Sunday will be from 3-6 p.m. and 3:30-6:30 p.m., respectively.

Cinderella Story Austin Squires Ousts No. 1 Seed Brandon Wu to Advance to Round of 32 in 119th U.S. Amateur Championship

Austin Squires was the last man to make the match-play field in a 27-for-3 playoff on Wednesday morning, eliminated medalist and No. 1 seed Brandon Wu, 22 on Wednesday evening, 2 up, in the Round of 64 of the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. 

 

Squires, who is No. 146 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), parred the fourth playoff hole on Pinehurst No. 4 to earn the third spot among 27 players who completed 36 holes at 5-over-par 145.  About two hours later, he squared off against Wu, the medalist at 3-under 137 and the No. 11 player in the WAGR.

Branden Wu Leads Weather Delayed Round 2 of 119th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club

Brandon Wu backed up an opening round of 5-under-par 65 on Monday with a 2-over 72 on Tuesday to virtually assure himself of earning medalist honors in the weather-delayed 119th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. 

 

Wu, 22, of Scarsdale, N.Y., who helped Stanford University to the 2019 NCAA team championship in May, had flown overnight from Lima, Peru, to Pinehurst after helping the USA capture the mixed-team title in the Pan American Games on Sunday, along with fellow U.S. Amateur competitor Stewart Hagestad.  His Monday round of 65 broke the competitive course record on Course No. 4 at Pinehurst, which reopened in 2018 after a renovation by course architect Gil Hanse.

Brandon Wu Blitzes Pinehurst No. 4 for Record 65 and Day 1 Lead at 119th U.S. Amateur Championship

Brandon Wu didn't waste much time adjusting to the Sandhills of North Carolina. 

 

Wu completed play in the Pan American Games on Sunday in Lima, Peru, finishing in fourth place individually and helping the mixed USA Team to a gold medal in the four-day event.  Then flew from Lima through Miami, Fla., to Pinehurst, N.C., arriving in mid-morning on Monday.  And shot 5-under-par 65 on Course No. 4 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club for the Day 1 lead in stroke play of the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship.

Patrick Reed hadn't won a Tour event since his 2018 Masters victory, but a final round 69 on Sunday was good enough to put him back in the winner's circle, as he won The Northern Trust by one shot over Abraham Ancer. 

 

Reed is also getting hot at the right moment, as a group of 70 players now heads to the BMW Championship at Medinah Country Club for the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs.  And Reed is ranked second in the FedExCup Standings behind only World No. 1 Brooks Koepka.

The 2019 Wyndham Championship: Inside the Course (Sedgefield Country Club Review)

The Wyndham Championship is the final tournament of the PGA Tour regular-season, and the last chance for players still scrambling for points to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs that begin next week at The Northern Trust.

Brooks Koepka WITB What's In The Bag: The Golf Equipment Koepka Used to Win the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational

The final round of the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational was billed as a heavyweight bought between World No. 1 Brooks Koepka and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy.  McIlroy had a one stroke lead to start the day, but Koepka birdied three of four holes on the front nine and cruised to career victory number seven, and his first World Golf Championship. 

 

Koepka's win put him in the driver's seat for Player of the Year, and his 5-under par, bogey-free round gave him a three-shot victory, finishing 16-under for the tournament over runner-up Webb Simpson.

The 2019 FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Inside the Course (TPC Southwind Review)

The PGA Tour heads to Memphis, Tennessee this week for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational after moving from Firestone Country Club for the last 19 years.

Scotty Cameron 2019 Teryllium T22 Putters Preview: Popular Face Insert Returns in Re-imagined Newport, Newport 2, and Fastback 1.5 Models

Twenty-two years after the emergence of his original Teryllium-inserted, major-winning TeI3 designs, Scotty Cameron has reimagined and announced the limited release of three new putter models built under the "T22" moniker. 

 

Available in golf shops beginning Aug. 16, the Teryllium T22 Newport and Teryllium T22 Newport 2 offer modernized versions of the TeI3 models first introduced in 1997, while the Teryllium T22 Fastback 1.5 becomes the first Fastback 1.5 designed with a Teryllium insert.
