Odyssey Ai-ONE Putter Review: 2023 PGAPappas 12 Days of Christmas Golf Giveaway DAY 1

I introduced you to the new Ai-ONE line in this preview article, and also gave you more insight on social back in November at the Ai-ONE launch.  But I'm going to touch on a few things here now in a sort of mini-review highlighting how the new Ai-ONE technology translates to performance and feel in all models.

The new Ai-ONE insert is my favorite Odyssey insert of all time.  The Ai-ONE insert is a combination of White Hot urethane on the hitting surface and contoured aluminum on the back (you can see the technology on the back or bottom window depending on model).  And it's a feel unlike any Odyssey insert I've ever tried.  It's still soft like you'd expect from a White Hot insert.  But for whatever reason it's also noticeably more responsive.

Hitting putts of all lengths with the new Ai-ONE gave me more and better feedback than previous White Hot putters I've used.  Long putts, short putts, the feel resonated into my hands.  I freaking loved the sensation.  Maybe it's the aluminum back, maybe it's a tweak to the urethane formula, I don't know.  But I found it very interesting because it's usually a milled face putter that gives you this kind of feedback.  For anyone who's always craved a soft feeling insert putter but didn't want to sacrifice responsiveness the Ai-ONE is pretty much the best of both worlds.

The Ai-ONE insert is also grooved unlike previous Odyssey White Hot putters.  And I'm telling you it's not just for decoration or appearance.  The Ai-ONE is quieter compared to other White Hot insert putters I've played.  And the grooves also got the ball rolling like a deep milled face, something that's extremely useful for most of us who play on greens that aren't PGA Tour immaculate.  Granted this was just an eyeball test (I don't have any Foresight monitor to measure skid and roll) but all my putts were smooth rolling immediately off the face.

The big story with Ai-ONE is how the multi-material face technology translates to a bigger and more stable sweet spot.  You can get a deep dive read of the tech in my preview article and over on the Odyssey website, but I'm telling you it's legit.  In fact I'd dare anyone to take an Ai-ONE for a test drive at a retail store putting green and I'll bet you experience exactly what I did.

I hit putts with Ai-ONE out towards the toe and heel and distances were nearly identical as pure center strokes.  No lie, nearly freaking identical.  I'm not talking extreme ends of the putter (you can still deaden putts out there if that's your game).  But anywhere inside the insert area is extremely forgiving for distance control.

Obviously different Ai-ONE head models will provide more or less stability based on the needs of your particular stroke.  And Odyssey will also make weight kits available to dial in weight and stability to your liking even more.  But in terms of pure putter forgiveness Ai-ONE is a gold medalist.  It's not going to make you automatic from anywhere on the green or improve a terrible putting stroke.  But it will help slight mishits find the bottom of the cup more often and get longer lag putt mishits closer to the hole.  And who doesn't need that?

Ai-ONE is destined to become an all-time favorite putter for many players and turn the greens into your happy place.
